Data Visualization Finding Balance in Motherhood: A Woman’s Transition

Note. This flowchart depicts a four-stage cycle of how a woman experiences her transition into motherhood. A woman begins in a “stable, balanced life” then moves clockwise into the next categories of the circle after giving birth and becoming a mother. Eventually, the mothers complete the cycle of their transition as they move back to the first stage and once again develop a “stable, balanced life.” The richer the color in the categories represents the amount of balance in a women’s life. The darkest blue color represents a life of stability, peace, and a healthy relationship with their selves. The medium tone colors represent a little less balance and more uncertainty. The lightest color represents a lack of balance and a loss of sense of self. The core finding is that the mothers will go through a period of transition, but a life of balance and stability will return as the women make their ways through the cycle. When the women learn to cope with the weight of motherhood and return to the top left quadrant-- they fully value their whole selves as they did prior to becoming mothers. On the side of each quadrant, there are details for the processes within each stage of the cycle to provide further insight into the mother’s experiences.
