How Does Depression Affect Female Athletes?
Note: This data visualization represents the “stages” each of the women went through during their depression. The colors of each “stage” represent how the women went from feeling the worst (red) to slowly feeling better (green). The first stage, “Feeling alone” represents how the women felt trapped, how they felt like no one was noticing their depression, and finally feeling like no one could relate to what they were going through. After feeling all these things, the women went into the next “stage” which was “Becoming vulnerable.” In this stage each of the women expressed how they felt the need to reflect on their situations. While reflecting they questioned why they were playing their sport, questioning what their intentions were, and eventually they reflected on how their depression was affecting their performance. For the last stage, after their reflections the women took the time to think about how they could ultimately take control of their situation. In other words, what could they control? They all came up with the question, “how can I be the best teammate I can be.” This led them to think about other things that were in their control which turned into helpful coping mechanisms.
