MIS 3000 - Database Project - Due April 11, 2019 at 6:30PM

REQUIREMENTS

1. Must use Microsoft Access 2016 or 2013 (and Microsoft Word/PowerPoint for the Project

Documentation)

2. Must be done individually or in teams of two people.

3. Database must contain a minimum of four tables (more than four tables is OK).

4. You must include the following data types in your database (more types are OK).

a. Short Text b. Number c. Attachment d. Date/Time e. Long Text f. Hyperlink

5. Database must be secured with a password

6. Upon successful login your database should load a custom “Main Menu” form

7. The Main Menu Form must provide quick access to:

a. a form for entering/deleting/modifying data in at least one table b. buttons to run the required queries c. buttons to run the required reports d. a hyperlink for getting help with your database

8. The Database project can be designed for any purpose, but it must be useful! If you are working and

would like to implement a database for a specific work project, that would be great. If you are not

working but have an idea that could be implemented in a database for business use - that is also

acceptable. If you are concerned about selecting a valid database purpose - check with your instructor.

9. What is considered a “useful” database? A useful database:

a. Has 5 or more queries: For example: a query that prompts a user for input, a query that contains

calculated fields, a query that answers an “obvious” question – if you have a sales database you should

have a query that will list the top salesperson by month (or by quarter or by year).

b. Has tables that are related (joined in relationship view) to at least one other table. Tables that are

not joined to one another shows a simplistic design and will be graded appropriately.

c. Has a minimum of 3 reports. (no explanation needed).

d. Has a minimum of 3 forms. (no explanation needed).

PROJECT TIPS

Do not simply run through the sample databases provided by Microsoft and turn that in as your finished

project. Do not turn in someone else’s work or the Used Car Database example from class.

Plan to spend between 20 to 40 hours working on this project. This project will go much better if you

start early and put in one hour per day (versus waiting until April 10th and pulling an all-nighter).

RESOURCES to help with this project:

GRADING

20% Project Documentation (Purpose of the Project, PASSWORD for the database, complete data

dictionary, Entity Relationship diagram in IDEF1X format, sample report output, etc.). This is to be

turned in with the database - should be in Microsoft Word or PDF format. Be sure to include the

password to access your database.

20% Project Design/Purpose and Application of Database Design If your design documentation says 4

tables – there should be 4 tables in your database. If your design documentation says the purpose of

your database system is to help track real estate sales but instead it does something different – you will

lose points in this section.

40% Meeting or exceeding the minimum technical requirements for the project (the actual database

requirements listed in this document).

10% Project Presentation 3-5 minutes in front of your peers including questions & answers.

10% Overall Opinion of Project Value and Effort

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT

Your project documentation and Access database are to be e-mailed to [email protected] on or

before 6:30PM on April 11, 2019.

If your database is too large to be e-mailed (even after zipping) – share your database file and

documentation on Google Drive and provide [email protected] access prior to the due date.

DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO START THIS PROJECT. IT WILL TAKE

LONGER THAN YOU THINK!
