DATA COMMUNICATION

This section is to get better answers for the analysis of all of the following elements: •

Performance requirements • see Cat5e 6 7 discussion above remember to select fastest devices. Hubs do not cut it!

Security requirements • Security policy, Firewalls, DMZ what does Cisco say is best practice? See Figure 1

http://cdn2.hubspot.net/hubfs/306754/Cisco_-Deploying_Firewalls_Throughout_Your_Organization.pdf?t=1478545035385

Remote access requirement •

Mobility requirements •

Bandwidth requirement

Quality of Service (QoS) requirement  VoIP Service requirement

You start to see that Cisco has lots of answers.

A common question is do I put VPN as part of security or remote access? A VPN allows encrypted communication which is a security consideration but it better fit under the remote access. VPN extends your network beyond the walls of the enterprise. I would include VPN under security to show that you understand its function.

Performance is a critical concept in any Network Design. A fundamental concept to this is understanding the network cable. We have various choices for cable but basically it is Cat (short for Category - we don't use cats to link network devices :)) 5e 6 and 7. Which cable? Each is faster than the other but the cost usually determines their use in a network. In the network design a common mistake is to use a fast cable but a slow switch = poor performance.
