Identifying Academic Articles

Full Sentence Outline Example:

I. Global warming is a gradual warming of the Earth from human activities.

A. It is characterized by a high concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere (Masters and Gramble 12).

1. Each year five tons of CO2 are pumped into the atmosphere.

2. The carbon dioxide traps heat.

3. 1998 set temperature records.

B. Carbon pollutants also eat a hole in the ozone layer (NOAA).

1. In 1998 this hole set a size record.

2. This allows more ultraviolet radiation to reach Earth.

C. If this problem is not corrected; we may see disastrous results (National Issues Forums)

1. There could be dramatic climate changes

a. There could be drought in the middle of continents

b. There could be many severe storms

c. There could be rising sea levels that would destroy coastal areas

2. There could be serious health problems (Stephens 54)

a. There could be an increase in skin cancer

b. There could be an increase in cataracts

c. There could be damaged immune systems

Conclusion Paragraph

Imagine if your research outline had been fleshed into an essay, this would be your conclusion. Rather than simply summarizing or listing facts, it should be the final critical analysis that situates your world dance form using cultural/historical lens. What is the critical, cultural importance of each of this dance form? What is the take-away, after having done your unique research?

Bibliography:

· Full sentence outlines are accompanied with an MLA reference list on a separate page. Information within the outline must also utilize MLA in-text citations.

· Use a minimum of two (2) scholarly sources (I will be checking them) and cite in MLA style properly in the outline, and the bibliography.

· What is a scholarly source? Not Wikipedia! That’s a great place to start but use the resources listed in the Wikipedia article to begin your research. Many websites are not considered scholarly sources and be sure to check if it is created by experts in the field. Start your research on Include a current link to each web source in your bibliography even though some styles do not require this any longer—your reader (me) will want to be able to follow a reliable trail back to your source. Use the DOI where possible (there is usually a "share" option that will show you this).

· Questions to help you start your research. Different aspects come forward for different dance forms such as historical, socio-economic, gender, class, race, and political conditions of the form:

· What of the history of the form is significant?

· What class of citizens engage in this form?

· How do the citizens come to learn this form?

· Is this an expensive and therefore exclusive form? Is it a folk form for the masses or is it more exclusive?

· What gender issues surface?

· Is this dance form supported or repressed by the government? Has this always been so?

· What does this dance say about the culture where it is practiced?

· Etc.
