Critical Thinking Assignment

You must attend CSUF Dance Theatre and write a 3 to 4 page critique of the performance. http://www.fullerton.edu/arts/theatredance/events.html  The paper is due on Titanium under assignments - the ticket must be scanned or photographed and included on your paper.  worth 55 points

Write a 6 paragraph essay analyzing 4 dances.

1) Define dance, you can use your own definition or quote some one but make sure you refer to your source. You do not need a bibliography just state who said it or where you retrieved it. Tell what dance concert you attended. Choose four dances to critique. Indicate the title of the dance and what it signifies. ( paragraph 1)

2) Analyze the dances from an artistic perspective. Use your own knowledge and understanding of life. Be creative, use your imagination and draw from your own background of experience. (paragraphs 2-5;use one paragraph to describe a dance)

a. Does the dance display an emotion? Describe the emotion and how it makes you feel.

b. Does the dance express any aspect of society? What era is it from, present, past, future? Describe it.

c. What type of movement and gestures were used to express the concept of the dance?

d. Did the production elements (set, lighting, music, or sound) contribute to the overall concept of the dance?

e. Conclude your paper with what you have learned and experienced. Discuss your understanding of dance as an art form. (paragraph 6)

3) Your paper must include an introduction (10 points), the body (10 points), and a conclusion (10 points).

4) For examples of critiques you can look in the newspaper, magazines, or on the internet for reviews of theatrical events. Notice what they relate the performance to and how they interpret it.

Please do not use the word ROUTINE to refer to a dance unless it truly looks like a regular habit or is excessively repetitive.

Points will be deducted for grammar errors, misspelling and disorganization.

Dance Critique Rubric

The following deductions will be made for missing requirements. Every paper starts at 50 points.

Deductions

10 points – for no ticket

10 points- no title page

5 points – for incomplete information (names, class, time, day, title of paper)

10 points no introduction paragraph

10 points no concluding paragraph

5 points – for each 1/2 page of text missing (3 full pages required, no deductions for more than 3 pages)

Deductions will be made for format, punctuation, grammar and spelling errors.

A Paper -

1. demonstrates a thorough, thoughtful comprehensive grasp of the topic in an organized manner

2. accurately and coherently provides specific details and examples to support the thesis and main ideas

3. provides evidence for the importance and significance of the topic to a culture, dance style, or history.

B Paper

1. demonstrates a comprehensive grasp of the topic with mostly proper organization

2. provides general textual details and examples to support the thesis and main ideas

3. strong paper with a superficial point of view, some discussion of the significance of the topic

5. some use of higher level vocabulary

C Paper

1. demonstrates a limited comprehensive grasp of the topic with problems in organization

2. provides few, if any, details and examples to support the thesis and main ideas

3. superficial survey of the topic
