Deliverable 6 - Assessing Community Needs
D6 live lecture transcript on the assignment
All right, so the executive summary should outline the challenges facing the community. You're free to use any community, even your own, so you can use any community that you want. Look at it. What I suggest students do is Google a community health needs assessment and whatever community you live in. I live.
Merle Point-Johnson 12 minutes 13 seconds
Outside, I live about 15 minutes outside of Atlanta. So what I would do is I would probably Google Emory University Health System Community Health Needs Assessment. That gives me a snapshot. It gives me a big picture of what a community health needs assessment will have.
Merle Point-Johnson 12 minutes 31 seconds
What would be the components of it, and it will also give me information about that community. Demographic information will be found there. There's a lot of information that you're going to need for this particular deliverable. It's going to be found in the community health needs assessment. So the goal of the executive summary is to describe specific challenges.
Merle Point-Johnson 12 minutes 50 seconds
For whatever community you've chosen, for instance, what are the various health challenges that need to be addressed in that community? So you want to include a description of the community's population, things like.
Merle Point-Johnson 13 minutes 5 seconds
The average age of the individuals in the community, the median income, the educational status, any other demographic information, and it will be found in the Community Health Needs Assessment. OK, so you if you Google Community Health Needs Assessment for every university.
Merle Point-Johnson 13 minutes 24 seconds
Health system, it's going to give me that community health needs assessment and it's going to give me this information. So the information will be found within that. What percentage of those are between the ages of 18 or above, right. So that's part of, I mean that might be one of the things that you put in there. That's that's just an example. It's not what.
Merle Point-Johnson 13 minutes 44 seconds
What I'm looking for you to do is just an example of one of the components of your your your demographics. So another good resource could be Kaiser Family Foundation. They have a lot of demographic resources as well, but I would definitely recommend that you.
Merle Point-Johnson 14 minutes 1 second
Stick with the community health needs assessment for the community because it's very specific and it's also easily located. All right, so potential barriers. There's a great article that I located. It's called How Do Mobile Health Clinics Impact Patient Access to Care. Now I located.
Merle Point-Johnson 14 minutes 21 seconds
At that, but you can find any article that you choose about mobile health clinics. You can use keywords like barriers, you can use keywords that like utilization, whatever, but whatever. You just look up a community health needs assessment is first, but I also would suggest that you look up a mobile health clinic.
Merle Point-Johnson 14 minutes 39 seconds
So this is the very good article that I located and it can help you to formulate your own list of potential barriers. OK, so you can Google search potential barriers to mobile clinics, OK, and that will give you some really good insights.
Merle Point-Johnson 14 minutes 57 seconds
OK.
Merle Point-Johnson 14 minutes 58 seconds
There's some indicators that you will find. If you find these indicate, you know, you just look for indicators that this the clinic is needed, right? The mobile clinic is needed, the rate of morbidity, whether it's chemical dependency, are there any mobility challenges? So those are some things that will tell you that the mobile clinic might be needed.
Merle Point-Johnson 15 minutes 18 seconds
But again, you want to make sure that you're tailoring it to the community that you're looking at.
Merle Point-Johnson 15 minutes 25 seconds
OK, so use data. You know, what does the data show as it pertains to the mortality rates? What does the data show relative to chemical dependence? If you are seeing that as part of the issues there, is there a trend? You have to look at the data to determine that, right? Is the data broken down demographically?
Merle Point-Johnson 15 minutes 44 seconds
So all of those factors are things you're going to find in that community health needs assessment. So what are resource recommendations based on what you've done when you've looked at that community health needs assessment for that community, what do you think are the needs? OK, so for a mobile clinic, a mobile clinic might.
Merle Point-Johnson 16 minutes 4 seconds
need physicians. They might need administrators. They might need advanced practice nurses. They may need social workers, whatever you think they need. And And I can tell you right now, it's going to be very expensive to have physicians on board, to have administrators on board. Um You might. It's very expensive to have any of these professionals
Merle Point-Johnson 16 minutes 24 seconds
But you might be in good shape if you were to say, well, we'll use advanced practice nurses like your nurse practitioners or your midwives or something, because it would be at least a little bit least costly than having the physician. OK. Also, what are your technology needs? You know, what type of systems?
Merle Point-Johnson 16 minutes 43 seconds
All you need. So those are things you want to think about.
Merle Point-Johnson 16 minutes 48 seconds
Now your survey instrument. You need to include your survey instrument and what I will tell you is what you want to start off with is like a a an invitation, if you will, to the community. Basically your survey instrument should be part of it, but you want to introduce your survey.
Merle Point-Johnson 17 minutes 8 seconds
Like let them know why the survey is being conducted because you want to get people to respond. Response rates on surveys can be pretty low unless people know exactly what it is that they are benefit. How that how does that benefit them? OK.
Merle Point-Johnson 17 minutes 23 seconds
So how would you administer the surveys? Talk about that and to whom you're going to administer these surveys. But that should be all a part of your your paper, your executive summary. But then you want again, you want to have your survey survey instrument and a part of your survey instrument needs to be that invitation to take the.
Merle Point-Johnson 17 minutes 43 seconds
Survey, OK.
Merle Point-Johnson 17 minutes 46 seconds
So your your survey instruments have to contain an introduction of the survey. Like I just said, give the potential respondents a reason to respond. Describe the benefits of the survey for those individuals. Develop the actual survey and make sure you're including the questions, the questionnaire.
