Cybercrime Analysis
The cybercriminal suspect nickname is Tesla. Tesla is a male graduate of the University of Minnesota. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. According to the school, Tesla was among the few international students in the university that got direct scholarships into the University of Minnesota after performing excellently in their high school curriculum. For that matter, Tesla is among the young adults with the smartest minds. Tesla comes from Central Romania, in a small town called Hackerville. The area has been ranked among one of the regions with the most cases of cybercrimes. In one of his interviews with a blogger, Tesla claims that he began using computers while he was still a toddler. He lived with father, who was a writer, her mother, and young sister.
Being around his father for a long time made him develop an interest in computers. Apart from his liking towards computers, he also developed an interest in mathematics, and the two subjects have made him the crazy hacker he is now. Currently, Tesla lives in Bucharest, the capital of Romania and has been associated with several cyber frauds and crimes. Tesla has been working for an information technology company in the city for three years, after which he quit the job. He claimed that the environment was not adequate for employee development. Since then, he has not been employed by any company. Surprisingly, he lives a lavish life and spends most of his time indoors and on “international travels” as he supposes. His “trip to Africa” during the date of the of crime at hand.
On the 12th September 2018, a cybercrime gang or rather an individual hacked into two major European banks’ systems and stole more than five hundred euros before the crime was discovered and rectified. The police identified eleven suspects including Tesla. According to the chief investigator, the pattern of the fraudulence at hand matches another that occurred in Romania in the previous month. Additionally, the program that was used at the latter was like the one that was used in hacking the bank's systems. An IT expert supposes that the technology used in the crime scene must have been so sophisticated to be owned and managed by any of the suspects identified. For that matter, the possible source of funding for the crime was detected. Two of the suspect's children banks were found containing a massive amount of money than any of the parent could afford. The firm that debited the cash into these accounts has been identified, and the investigation about the transactions continues.
Despite maintaining his life private, the investigators performed in-depth research on Tesla’s family and drew several conclusions. First, his sister had just moved to pursue a degree in petroleum engineering at a university in South Africa. The sister did not secure a scholarship opportunity. Therefore, the family will have to support all her academic and transport expenses. Having no stable source of income, Tesla remains the only person that could help her sister in pursuit of education. This instance provides a motive for committing the crime. Secondly, Tesla’s whereabouts during the day of crime remain uncertain since there are no proofs that he was on his trip to Africa. Lastly, the fact that Tesla is not employed and still can afford to travel over the world raises questions about his source of income. Therefore, these submissions are adequate to prove Tesla as the main culprit of the cybercrime at hand.
Tesla’s instance falls into both behavioral and cognitive theories. First, Tesla comes from a town that is prone to cybercrimes. He is a learned person, which puts him in a position of having many learned friends who have the same knowledge. According to (Lewis, 2014) human behaviors get influenced by the families on come from, their environmental exposures as well as mass media. The researchers suppose that people that come from areas that people break laws are more likely to behave the same. These instances explain the behavioral theory. Unto the cognitive approach, Tesla is more likely to indulge in cybercrimes to obtain enough resources to support his family. As mentioned earlier, his parents have no stable income source and his sister need to finance her education. Being the central figure, Tesla might even indulge in unlawful activities to solve the problems at hand. According to (Henderson, 2017) criminal in this group indulge to despite understanding the negative impact the crime will have on the victim.
Tesla has been associated with many gangs operating all over the world, and it is suspected that he works on contracts for the major firms that exploit other people and organizations. He is generally a hacker. Hackers have a nearly same pattern of fraudulence. First, the hacker or his accomplice visits the organization they are planning to steal from and conducts in-depth research about the systems, security as well as the key employees. Secondly, the hackers infiltrate into the firm’s computers and install a virus or malware without being noticed or suspected. This malware enables the hacker to access the organization’s confidential information such as the list of customers or their credit cards. With this information, the hackers can drain finances from the customer’s bank account to their accomplices or into their own. The culprits in most cases have powerful malware that can easily bypass the security features of the bank (Lewis, 2014). Before the fraudulence gets discovered, the bank could have incurred significant losses.
