Technological advancements have brought much progress to the development of human beings in multiple industries. They have also provided an opportunity to attackers to use the technologies to achieve their own ends. That is why the topic of cyber warfare is the chosen topic of research. Cyber warfare is the use of technology to launch attacks against enemy states over the internet (MetaCompliance, 2018).
1. What brought this area to your attention?
The topic of cyber warfare has grown to be one of the most controversial areas in information systems. Since the attack of the Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities using the Stuxnet worm in 2010, the topic of cyber warfare has always captured my attention (Langner, 2011). It is really interesting how a country can launch an attack against another country without deploying a single soldier to that country. The ability of countries to wage war against their enemies in cyber space is really a technological awe. This is even more intriguing when one realizes that the tools that can be used to launch a successful attack against a victim are freely available online for download. These tools usually come fitted with a database of exploits which can be used to get unauthorized access to a computer system through known vulnerabilities (Jenczewski & Colarik, 2008). The tools can even be used by a person with little or no skills in information systems with incredible success rates against vulnerable targets.
2. How interested are you in this area?
I am very interested (5) in the area given the endless applications of the area in the modern world. An issue such as this is of much interest to me and should of equal interest to others given that a group of hackers could wipe the entire population of a country by using a computer only.
3. Is the problem area in the mainstream of your field of study? Explain.
Cyber warfare is partially in the mainstream area of my study with the other part being in politics and social sciences. As a beginner in the area of information technology, it is important to focus on areas which are close to my field. This makes it easy to make useful research arguments and topics. An area in the mainstream study area of my field is suitable because it is easier to make better research due to the background knowledge I have in the field. Research in an area close to my field of study also makes it easy to locate study materials and understand them for the research. Research can be greatly assisted by fellow students and friends who share a study field with me. It is easy to locate students to help in the study if the research is in the mainstream area of my study.
4. Is there a substantial body of literature on the problem area?
There is a large number of literature available online that can be used to shed light on the area of cyber warfare and its effects on the countries involved and the whole world at large.
5. Is the problem area timely? Explain.
The area of information technology is one that is growing at a rapid rate in the modern times. The common concern among most users of information technology and related technologies is the issue of security of their information and their devices (Kapoor & Bhaksar, 2013, p.37). Businesses, organizations and government agencies are more concerned with the security of the national infrastructure. It is therefore the general concern of governments and its subject citizens about physical security which is closely related to the security of their information systems as well as their national infrastructure (Bijou, 2016).
