essay questions part 2
Culture
1. Culture can be defined as ideas, traditions, norms, values, and virtues of particular people in society. Cultures differ from region to region and from people to people. Minority groups are the people belonging to same community, culture or religion living in an area but are in lesser number as compared to other people who are from other religions, culture and community. Stereotypes are the pre-conceived notions of people, about a certain entity or an image that they form beforehand. Discrimination is to treat a person in a different manner than the others while also downplaying and ridiculing a person due to their gender, color, religion or language. All these concepts are interrelated to the groups of people belonging to the people that live together and in these times those that work together. Minority group that live in any part of area are certainly discriminated and certain stereotypes are linked to them. An example of this would be those that are more financially stable and discontent for those that work for them, this also includes discrimination and prejudice. In managing a diverse workforce these concepts do interrelate with one another, as in a diverse workforce there will be a large quantity of employees and all of them will belong to different traditions and cultures. There will also be stereotypes about others and the cultures from where each employee is coming from. Managing discrimination at the workplace is important, as discrimination can cause demoralization along with reduction in the overall productivity of the employee. What is important is to manage all of them with utmost conviction and equality, for someone thing that might be right and wrong to they may have the opposite meaning to others. To have a proper and healthy environment it is the responsibility of the manager and those in human resources, to help foster understanding and educate those of different culture so that together they can ignore all the stereotypes and all kinds of discrimination to maintain a healthy and a positive environment.
2. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a very important law when it comes to the rights and the values of those with Disabilities. The law became an act in 1990. What the law prohibits and prevented any kind of discrimination and prejudice against anyone who suffer from any kind of disability. This was implemented in all areas of living, be it the professional world, or the private life or any public or specific place. For example, all the areas that are accessed by the general public and all the aspects of transportation, school, and jobs all were affected by this law. According to the Equality Act 2010, a disabled person or individual is defined as anyone who has a physical or a mental (psychological) impairment. This impairment has had a negative impact on the person in the long run, and then he is defined as a disabled person and not as a normal person who can do all the regular things like the other people. ADA had ordered the heads to provide proper accommodations to the disabled employees so that the employees can also get a chance to live and enjoy life like the normal people and the normal employees do. The accommodation can be refused on the basis of the personal choice of the employee if he has his accommodation and is not comfortable in moving into another accommodation given by the company. The main four barriers to quality existence are Attitudinal barriers; thee prevent the person from doing the normal and daily activities because of the disability. Communication barriers, as the person with disabilities, cannot be able to communicate (speak, hear, see) like normal people and that is why it is difficult for them to communicate properly. Physical barriers; these include the physical constraints that the disability causes in the person's normal life and they are not able to be physically active as most of the normal people. The last barrier is the policy barrier, meaning the disabled persons are not able to follow or are not aware of the rules and the regulations as well as the laws that the citizens need to follow at any cost. All these things come together to bring a lot of barriers and make the disabled person different from the normal person who can easily do all the activities.
3. It is not always important that the subordinate groups merely accept the definitions and ideologies of the dominant group. There is a lot of thinking and a lot of backstories involved in the entire process. There are two groups in the society because for some reason, the majority has an upper hand and the minority has a different point of view and thought process. They think differently, but the opinion of the majority is more respected and put into consideration as compared to that of the minority group. The minority does not accept the ideologies and rules of the majority like this; there is a lot of burden and expectations that come along. One of the major reasons for the minorities finally giving in and eventually accepting what the majority has to say to them is because they do not have an option. They try to raise their voice and do the work so that their voice is heard and they are able to make a difference but that is not the case because the majority always has an advantage over the other group and their voice and opinion will always be very louder and a lot clearer. Another aspect to note is the fear of being ignored and not accepted by society. As at the end of the day the people who have a different and a diverse opinion as compared to the majority are not looked upon and are treated with prejudice. Therefore the minority groups have to finally give in and accept what the majority is saying as there is a fear of isolation from the rest of the world and also a lot of pressure from the other entities like friends and families to follow the conventional path and do what the rest of the people meaning the majority is doing. All these things come together to change the perception and the minority groups have to give in and follow what the majority is asking them to do.
4. The answer will be talking about disabled people and women. The law has been very considerate and is favoring the disable people all across, just like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) says that there needs to be no discrimination and harsh behavior towards the disabled people, also it is important to note that at public gatherings where there is an immense crowd and people from various walks of life come and interact it become difficult for the disabled people to gel in because of the stereotypes and the strange opinions and notions of the people. Therefore all this needs to be taken into consideration and worked upon very carefully. Also, the act gives a deep benefit to the disabled people at the workplace, firstly not many companies employ people with disabilities at the workplace and do not give them a respectable position at their jobs. However, the act exclaims the company heads to be very careful when treating and dealing with disabled people. It has been announced that disabled people get their right through various perks and other advantages that can help them live life like normal people live and also enjoy the benefits through the perks they get. Coming to the treatment of the women and how the laws have helped them stand up for themselves and change the way the world views them to be. There has been a lot of work and various laws have been implemented that gives women a safe and a secure feeling and they feel protected when living in the times when women are considered to be inferior to men. The fair labor stands act in 1938, has helped the working women get equal and the same opportunities as the men get, right from the wages to the working hours have been made so that more and more women come and work perfectly with their convenience. The equal pay act of 1963 gives the females an edge over men and makes sure that the women get the same salary as the men get when it comes to the work, as earlier women were getting lesser salaries and men more, though they were working more than the men. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 was another important activity, that gave the women leverage to raise their newly born children and take some time off for themselves as well so that they can take care of their health and fitness, this changed a lot for the women and made them at ease with themselves and the way they were working under so much pressure. The Pregnancy Discrimination Action of 1978 gave the women leverage that they would not be discriminated against and treated differently when they are pregnant and will be seen as the regular citizens without any differentiation. All these acts and laws made the position of women stronger and gave them a lot of security and ease when it comes to the working environment.
5. The act that was signed by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964, was essential and important due to various reasons the most important being that it helped is preventing any kind of discrimination at the workplace. It made the discrimination amongst employees based on color, race, gender, and region baseless and gave all the employees a chance to work equally without any sort of differences. This law was the most popular and changed the way things were seen in workplaces before. There were a lot of advantages of this the most important being that people were given a lot of confidence as now there won't be any fear of discrimination and difference, people could work easily in a healthy and comfortable environment without any fear. This resulted in a lot of positives most importantly people were more focused now and this resulted in them giving their best to the job assignments and getting great results. Also, more and more people agreed to be a part of the employment pieces of training and were okay to come in and do other jobs, as there was no fear of discrimination. A disadvantage of this could be that the people in the majority became more rigid and against the system, as they thought that this will take away their superiority and monopoly and they continued to bully and discriminate in a subtle manner. However, there were more positive and fewer negatives when it comes to the overall impact and the decisions of this act in general. This law was a great way of making people understand what is acceptable and what is not.
6. The seventh amendment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title VII, states that five of the main classes must be protected and should be no discrimination on these people, the five classes include gender, national origins of a person, color, race, and religion. These are the personal aspects of a person's life and no one should have the right to comment and ridicule any of these things, this was laid down strictly by the act. For example, people with a dark complexion must not be ridiculed and treated indifferently and should be given the usual respect, similarly, the men and women should be treated equally and the notions that women are inferior to men need to be stopped at all costs. These were a few examples of how the discrimination was stopped and prevented by the act. The race and ethnic relations in the United States of America saw two sides, where one side saw an improvement in the overall attitude of the people, people became more considerate and sensitive as the act helped them get awareness and they got to know the difference in what is right and what is wrong. On the other hand, though there was a lot of racism and the defensive nature of the majority groups increased and led to various tensions and problems for the people who were in the minority and siff4rend discrimination. Therefore, this legislation had both a positive as well as a negative impact on the racial and ethnic relations in the United States of America.
