NURS 270: 2021 Group Culture Presentation
Assignment overview: This assignment will utilize five core competencies from the AACN as a framework. These competences are considered essential for baccalaureate graduates. The goals of the assignment are to introduce students to the concepts of culture, cultural competence, and cultural humility; and introduce students to similarities and differences of life practices of various cultural groups.

Assignment guidelines:
1. Overview
a. Each student will randomly draw from a predetermined set of cultural groups. Each group will consist of three (3) to four (4) students. Culture’s to be presented include:
· Swedish
· Native American/American Indian
· Karen
· Hispanic/Latino
· Somalia
· Hindu
· Russian
· Hmong
b. There will be some supervised lab/clinical time to work on the presentation. Students will need to utilize out of class time as well to prepare for the assignment.
c. It is the expectation that students will identify four (4) community resources and visit one (1) community resource for the selected cultural group. Consider interviewing people within the cultural group, visiting sites related to the cultural group, or attending cultural/public events.
d. Each group must submit a work plan to the D2L assignment folder outlining the team’s responsibilities by the due date on the course calendar.
2. Presentation
a. Presentations: Each group will present for 35-45 minutes including ten minutes for questions/answers. Each group member must present a portion of the presentation but should understand the entire presentation.
i. Presentations will occur on a clinical day, please review the clinical schedule for due date.
b. Components
i. Develop a PowerPoint containing the components of the presentation guidelines. Cite any referenced material on the slides.
1. Use creative methods to supplement and illustrate the information being shared in the Power Point. This can be things like visual aids, music, examples, or skits.
ii. Develop a reference slide with at least 3 scholarly sources (one must be from a professional journal). This reference slide will be formatted to APA specifications. (Wikipedia is not a scholarly source). All referenced material from your PowerPoint must be on the reference slide.
c. Group members: Each group member must present during the presentation.
d. Professionalism: Students should present their presentation in a professional manner. Consider your nonverbal and verbal communication as well as your attire, business casual. (No jeans, T shirts, or shorts; be present and engaged; Do not chew gum during the presentation).
e. Reflection: Students will complete a reflection in class evaluating one's learning.
3. Guidelines for the PowerPoint Presentation
a. Title Slide:
i. Provide a title for the presentation. Include the names of all the group members.
b. Learning Objectives:
i. Develop three or more learning objectives for your presentation. There must be at least one learning objective for each of the three domains; behavioral, affective, and cognitive. Your theory/clinical instructors can coach you in developing your objectives. (See module in D2L on teaching/learning)
c. Presentation:
i. Cultural Group
1. Describe the cultural group (Country of origin; Parameters of this cultural group that differentiates it from other groups?)
2. Demographics: Provide current demographics (ages, gender, and other relevant demographics in the United States and Minnesota)
3. Communication/language: What is (are) the traditional language(s)? What is the literacy rate? How does the group retain/share important history?
ii. Family/Social Structure
1. Family Structure: Describe the structure of the nuclear/extended family. What are the living arrangements (members/location) for the family? What are some beliefs about children and elder care?
2. Roles: Describe roles within the family or social groups. Are there roles which are generally for/not for men or women, adults, elders, or children? Who is responsible for tasks such as income, child rearing, meal preparation, maintenance, and other duties?
3. Decision making: Who is generally responsible for decision making? Who would a member of this culture consult when an important decision needs to be made?
iii. Health beliefs/Illness beliefs
1. Health: What is specific to this group regarding the concept of health? What do people portray/share/believe regarding health? How do people stay healthy?
2. Illness: What does illness mean in this culture? What makes people ill?
3. Death/Dying: What do people believe about death and dying?
4. Healers: Describe the healers and their role in this culture. Where are the healers found? How do the healers influence health promotion and health maintenance?
iv. Spirituality
1. 1. Spirituality: Describe the scope of spirituality in this culture. What religions are practiced?
2. 2. Spiritual Practices: What role do spiritual practices have in this culture? Give two examples of spiritual practices used for health promotion.
v. Nutrition
1. Food: What is the significance of food/meals? Are there any health-related challenges specifically related to food/access?
2. Food and health: What are the cultural beliefs about how food influences health?
vi. Health Disparities
1. Health Related Challenges: Describe one barrier to health promotion/maintenance encountered by this cultural group (such as genetically related diseases, access to care, or other health determinant). What is the impact of the barrier on the overall health of the cultural group?
vii. Implications for Nursing Practice
1. Outcomes: What is the potential impact of cultural competence on your nursing practice? Provide two specific examples from your research.
d. Conclusion:
i. Provide a conclusion slide which summarizes the highlights of your presentation. (The conclusion slide should summarize content related to your objectives).
