Cultural Immersion Report Note Sheet
Instructions: Take this with you and fill it in during or immediately after. You will use these notes to create your report. Take notes & make lists at or immediately after the event: (handwritten is fine!)
1. Critical Choice: Why did you choose to participate in this particular experience? (write before going)
3. Impressions: What were your initial impressions/feelings/thoughts and observations as you entered into this cultural experience?
4. Cultural Observations: Briefly describe/state as many cultural observations as you can: body language, costumes/clothing, behaviors, communication styles, decorations/symbols used, general environment/atmosphere, etc. . Were people sitting or standing? If sitting: rows, circle or scattered? You are also encouraged to analyze and conclude on (at least briefly) what you observed.
5. Reflections on Communications: Summarize then reflect on at least three different (and hopefully substantive) conversations you had with participants, or speeches given at this event. Briefly describe with whom you interacted and what you learned from them. Then include your own reflection: what did you think, feel, learn, decide, or conclude from the information?
6. New Insights: First, what did you learn of the customs, rules, or social mores? (example: at a volleyball game, all stand for the final point.) Were stereotypes validated or shattered? Do you have a more insightful understanding of this group? Include any other general thoughts or comments.
7. Conclusion: How can and will you specifically apply the insights you gained from this experience? (insight into yourself and/or this group)
8. Artifact: Collect something from the event! Photo, flyer, brochure, napkin, or an object. Write a brief description of the artifact, include it (scanned or photo) then describe how it is symbolic of the group.
