Cultural Humility
• A process of self reflection/critique and discovery to examine one’s own cultural identities, beliefs, and biases
• Understanding of others to build honest and trustworthy relationships
• Not as a discrete end point but as a commitment and active engagement in a lifelong process
• Recognizes the dynamic nature of culture since cultural influences change over time and vary
Cultural Competence
• Goal is to produce confident, competent providers with specialized knowledge/skills to serve racial/ethnic minority groups
• The focus is to learn and examine other’s belief system
• Culture typically circumscribed to race/ethnicity, with little attention to other aspects of culture
• Does not incorporate self-awareness since goal is to learn about other’s culture rather than reflection of own background
• Has been criticized for potentially promoting stereotypes
