This is a brief overview on how to complete the Cultural Fieldtrip assignment. The first thing you need to do is choose your cultural group. Take a look around you... are you a member of any club, organization, sports team, etc. If you are, you may want to choose a group you're a member of to focus on. While this is an option, group membership is not required. Feel free to look beyond your current culture groups. ------------ Have you noticed groups around you that you don’t belong to, but see definite membership aspects in their structure? You may want to take a closer look at one of these cultural groups as the focus of your assignment. ---------------- Just by enrolling in this class, you are a member of the following cultures:

 CSS  College student  Distance education student  Internet user  CTA 1101 classmate  Chosen Major/Minor  Graduating class of 20_ _, and more!

-------------- What I'm asking you to do is look for evidence of culture in your everyday life using the guidelines I’ve listed in the assignment. By answering question #3 letters A-F on the assignment overview, you will create a profile of this group. As you construct your report, take a moment to consider what makes this group unique. What are shared values, beliefs, language, and behavior? Is there a specific style of dress? Are there requirements to gain membership? Does gender play a role? ------------ Here is an example of breaking down a cultural group you may encounter in your everyday life: For instance, if you go to a coffee shop, you will notice that Starbucks has a culture. For the most part, its members are those who like coffee. Gender does not determine membership. You can gain membership into this group by frequenting a Starbucks. There is evidence of an intercultural language. When ordering, you may say (Half-Caff, Latte, Make it Skinny, Double-shot, Straight up, etc.), these words have shared meaning in this culture. One cultural practice of this group is writing customer names on their cup. As a member, you recognize this cultural group by their branding practices; employees wear green aprons, there is signage in and outside the store. The Starbucks logo is unique; it is iconic in our larger culture. That logo on purchases denotes your membership in this group to others. One thing that makes this culture unique is that its members all enjoy consuming coffee products. There is evidence of culture everywhere. I want you to be cognizant of it; see culture as more than ethnicity, country of origin, etc. Take a closer look... have fun... be creative.
