Agency and Structure

Agency: the ability of individuals and groups to exercise free will and to make social change whether on a small or large scale

Structure: patterned social arrangements that have an effect on agency and our cultural emotions

Our choices are enabled or constrained by structure.

Intersectionality

The interconnectedness of social arrangements of social class/status, gender/transgender, race/ethnicity (racialization), sexuality, social movements as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage. Through an awareness of intersectionality, we can better acknowledge and ground the differences among us to build intersectional coalitions for change.

What cultural emotions do you see and hear in this video clip and in reading the poem?

I am Joaquin /Yo Soy Joaquin was written by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales, a Chicano activist from Denver, Colorado in 1967.After a brief career as a professional boxer, Gonzales became a leading figure in the Chicano Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. In the poem, Joaquin (the narrator) speaks of the historical triumphs, struggles, and inherent contradictions experienced by Mexicans and Mexican Americans. He dedicated this poem to the younger generation of Mexican Americans.

Structural Theory: Status differentiation and sentiments each establish expectations that influence action opportunities, performances, and evaluation of performances. If behavior meet expectations, they reinforce the status and sentiment order.
