UN’s international bill of rights.

This document details the rights of workers throughout the world.

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. (December 1948)

DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

The right to liberty and equality is the birthright of every human being.

Human beings are rational and moral, this gives them certain rights.

Forbids any discrimination in regards to color, sex, language, religion, political, or other opinions.

DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS

Everyone has the right to work and free to choose employment.

Everyone has the right for equal pay for equal work.

The right to rest and leisure.

The right to a standard of living adequate for health and well-being.

BARRIERS TO IMPLEMENTATION

Some countries refused to endorse the International Bill of Human Rights.

Some countries endorsed but did not pass laws.

Some countries endorsed, passed laws, but did not enforce them.

EXAMPLES OF US AND EU BASED LAWS

  • Civil Rights act of 1964.
  • Age Discrimination in Employment Act 1967.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act 1991.
  • In Europe: Provisions against discrimination against women, immigrants, and minorities.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

Definition: any unwanted sexual attention.

Can be made as a condition for employment.

Refusal can create a hostile work environment.

It is not only about women! Men can be harassed as well.

The continued segregation of women into lower paying jobs and having male bosses has contributed to the problem.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT

  • Impacts on employee:
  • Violates human dignity.
  • Undermines self esteem of the worker.
  • Affects the well being of the worker.
  • Undermines his/her right to equal opportunities.
  • Loss of productivity, low moral, absenteesim, and leaving the job.
