Cultural Competency in Interprofessional Healthcare

HSP 2220

Rose, P. (2013). Cultural Competency for the Health Professional. Jones and Bartlett; Burlington, MA.

The percentage of emerging majorities is increasing in the United States. Because of this fact healthcare professionals need to be cultural competent, in order to best serve all patients. Appreciating diversity, whether it be cultural or otherwise, allows for more optimal health care provision. The reasons seem obvious but health disparities amongst different cultures and ethnicities, although well researched, is not necessarily acknowledged.

Why is Cultural Competency Important? CH1

Patients must feel comfortable about discussing their healthcare concerns.

Patients need to be able to receive optimal healthcare.

Patients can be noncompliant if they feel they are not receiving adequate healthcare services thus possibly leading to more pathology.

Patients may not disclose all of their health information because; they feel no one listens anyway, they have fear of being judged, they feel like it is unnecessary, or many other reasons.

If patients feel they are not receiving good healthcare they may lose faith in the whole medical system.

There are many underserved individuals who cannot afford health adequate care. (The Affordable Care Act strives to ensure everyone has healthcare but the full impact of this bill has yet to be revealed).

The need for healthcare for undocumented immigrants remains a complicated issue.

The need for cultural competency needs to addressed in the education of healthcare professionals.
