Cultural Activity

PURPOSE: Cultural activities/events give you the opportunity to experience culture outside of the classroom and gain experience critically analyzing another culture. The objective of this project is to have a new experience and focus on the cultural aspects of that experience. With this assignment, you will also meet the following Foundational Studies Learning Objective:

Demonstrate an understanding of the way in which cultures and/or languages are impacted by and adapting to globalizing influences; develop information literacy skills

TASKS: Every semester, the LLL department designates specific cultural events for students that will expose them to a deeper cultural aspect of another international culture. Students attend ONE event and use the experience to write the Cultural Activity Paper. Attending an activity apart from those approved by the department is NOT acceptable for this paper.

The paper requires a research component. Students need to show that they are able to locate and properly analyze information about the topic. Online research is acceptable, as long as it is clear quality resources were accessed. Conduct the research on the topic before and/or after attending the event. In the paper, make it clear when the research was completed.

CRITERIA:

· For your report: This is NOT a summary. It’s a reflection and analysis. It’s more than saying, “I learned a lot about culture”. What did you learn? What does it mean? Why is the information presented important to the culture? What does it say about who they are, how they live, or what they value? Do you know anything about its origin or how long it has survived? What does it mean to you? What impact would it have if YOU practiced that tradition(s) or had that value(s)? NOTE: Don’t tell me superficial information. Tell me your ANALYSIS about the significance of what you learned and REFLECT on the impact it would have for those who partake and share the value of the celebrations/traditions.

· RESEARCH: Where can you find more information on this topic? Locate, read, and provide and brief analysis of AT LEAST THREE quality sources. Explain why the source is a quality resource and how it helped you understand something about this cultural topic. You may also use reflection in this section to critically discuss your experience trying to conduct research on this topic.

· Length: If you are using Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced with 1 inch margins, the report should be a minimum of 2.5 pages of specifics of what you learned, what it means, why its important, what it says about the culture represented, and your analysis and reflection of what impact it has on you.
