Hum 335 - Recommended Films

Top Ten Recommendations:
1. My Family/Mi familia. The history of a Los Angeles family, with Edward James Olmos, Esai Morales, and Jimmy Smits. Directed by Gregory Nava (Nava is one of the most important Hollywood directors of contemporary film).
2. El Norte. A brother and a sister flee the military government of Guatemala, pass through Mexico, and arrive in Los Angeles. Directed by Gregory Nava. (This film is available to view on campus; call 909-880-5060 for information).
3. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. A group of Spanish women have various experiences with the men in their lives in this classic film by Pedro Almodóvar, Spain's leading director.
4. ¡Guántanamera! A dedicated Cuban bureaucrat experiences problems in burying a loved one in Castro's Cuba.
5. Los olvidados (English title: The Young and the Damned). One of Luis Buñuel's (1900- 1983) most famous films about the forgotten slum children of Mexico City.
6. The Milagro Beanfield War. In the town of Milagro, New Mexico, both Mexican-Americans and Anglos learn much about each other in the case of Joe's beanfield.
7. Selena. Jennifer López's first important film starring as the Tejana singer. Directed by Gregory Nava.
8. 1492: The Conquest of Paradise. Director Ridley Scott (Gladiator) combines myth and history in the person of Columbus, played by Gérard Depardieu.
9. Doña Herlinda and her son. A gay son in Mexico satisfies both his mother's wish that he marry and his own affection for another man.
10. The Official Story. During Argentina's "Dirty War," a woman comes to terms with her husband's participation in the military government and her love for her adopted daughter.
