Lesson Plan Title: __Learn the Names and Identify Different Shapes

Date: _____September 3, 2021___        Number of Days Covered: __2______

Subject: __Geometry___________          Grade Level: ___2_____

Standards Addressed

Michigan Standards: Grade 2 GEOMETRY (2.G)

Reasoning with shapes and their attributes

1. Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.

2. Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.

3. Partition circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc. and describe the whole as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognized that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.

Specific Observable/Measurable Learning Objectives

· After going through basic shape recognition, students will be able to identify what a square, triangle, rectangle, circle, oval, and diamond are with at least 83 % accuracy.

· After going through basic shape recognition, the student will be able to match the shape to the word with at least 83% accuracy.

· After going through basic shape recognition, the student will be able to draw, compare and contrast those shapes to each other with at least 83% accuracy

Connections:

By the time students are in the 2nd grade, they should have seen and be able to tell you the names of different shapes and identify them. This lesson will focus on making sure they can identify but also be able to draw, compare and contrast the shapes.

Evaluation of Student Learning:

The geometry recognition activity and follow-up discussions will be used to evaluate for understanding. The student will create a shape sheet that will be grade as performance-based assessment. The evaluation aligns with my objectives because the student will be able to recognize the shapes, draw the shapes and match the shapes. The measurable data could be that 2nd grade students can see these shapes, call them by name and can notice different objects with same shape.

Required Materials Needed for Lesson:

Construction paper (different colors), glue, scissors, drawing paper, pencils, crayons, television, video, internet

Student’s Background/Prior Knowledge/Experience:

The students do have prior knowledge of shapes from playing with blocks in different shapes and sizes in class and at home. Also, from seeing pictures displayed around the room of different objects that resemble the shapes.

Main Ideas:

1. Get the student to recognized shapes.

2. Be able to draw the shapes.

3. Be able to see the use of the shape in pictures.

Key Vocabulary:

Square, Triangle, Rectangle, Circle, Oval, and Diamond; these words will be introduced to the students by showing them the shapes and telling them about each one.

Motivational Strategy/Anticipatory Set for Lesson:

How are geometric shapes apart of our daily lives? This question will be answered through discussions and watching video.

Content:

8:00 – 8:05 Greet students, take attendance, and collect homework

8:05 – 8:10 Introduce the Geometry lesson to the students; let them know the words they will learn and the activity that goes with the lesson; pass out materials for activity; start the video.

8:10 – 8:20 Video: Recognizing shapes| Geometry| Early Math| Khan Academy; Recognizing shapes | Geometry | Early Math | Khan Academy - YouTube Geometric lines, geometric shapes and plane shapes - Geometry for kids - YouTube

8:20 – 8:30 Discuss what was seen in the video, to see if they can make some connections to the shapes seen in the video. Do activity related to the video

Instructional Strategies to Be Used – Be Specific

1. Make the lesson hand-on

2. Use of visuals – video, pictures

3. Ask questions that would promote critical thinking

Differentiated Instructional Support:

Visual-impaired and hearing-impaired students will learn from watching and hearing the videos. The hands-on learners will be able to feel how the shape is formed and ELL students will learn from watching the videos and working with the other students.

Integration of Technology:

The only technology used for this lesson was the television, videos, and the internet.

Integration of Technology by P-12 Students:

As stated in the integration of technology section, students will not use a laptop, computer, or tablet for this activity, so there will be no need for them to monitor their progress.

Homework or Home Connections:

A homework sheet will be sent home for the students to complete; match the name of the shape to the picture of the shape. The home connection will come into play when the student goes around the house and notice that things around the house, look like the shapes they learned in class.

Closure:

After students have returned the homework back to class, we will discuss the homework and if they found items in their home that match the shapes.

Student Learning Based on Data

The data tells me that students in this grade are familiar with different shapes and know some of the names of them and can make connections to them in the world. The next topic will be to focus on what are the different kinds of parallelograms.
