Enigma This lab consists of two activities. Activity 1 involves construction of a paper model of an Enigma machine. Activity 2 involves executing an electronic model of an Enigma machine.

The resulting model will serve as a physical, 3-dimensional, visual example of the wiring inside a real Enigma machine. The paper templates have been pre-printed for you, and distributed in class. You are permitted to print your own paper templates if you so desire, but keep in mind that templates must be printed on size A4 paper, “turn off any scaling options in your printer software so that it is printed at the exact size required. Scaling may be set to "Fit to printable area" by default; you should set it to "None". The templates use colour to help you follow the lines, but this is not essential and you can print them in black-and-white if you like.” You will need an empty, regular size Pringles potato chip can to complete this project. Select Enigma model M3 (upper right drop down). Compare operation of the electronic Enigma machine to that of your recently constructed paper Enigma machine. Confirm that the electronic model returns the same output as the paper model when similar input settings are used. Examine the HTML javascript source code for the electronic Enigma simulator to complete this exercise. Deliverables Bring your completed paper Enigma model to class for visual inspection and demonstration. Write a brief lab report describing the construction and execution of the paper model, the execution and comparison of the electronic model to the paper model, and your thoughts on Enigma as a cryptographic platform. Use the background information provided above to help frame your thoughts. Upload your finished lab report to BlackBoard in the form of a Word document.
