Assignment 6:
Bias in Algorithms
Student’s First and Last Name
File → Make a Copy of this file so you can edit it on your Google Drive. Add your name to the file name.
Add your name to the title page 1.
Move to page 2 where you’ll find general instructions.
For each page, synthesize your research and write in complete sentences in essay format using 14pt type.
Write about each question, prompt, or process provided in the Notes below each slide.
Add additional pages if you need more room.
Cite sources by using hyperlinks in the Titles of the Article and Titles of Laws. See the example on the Writing Requirements page. Cite all articles and laws that you mention.
Do not change the font styles. They must stay at 14 point Lato left-justified type.
Do not bullet the paragraphs. Write in essay format only.
Add all sources to the Bibliography page.
Include author, title, publisher, date, and URL.
When in doubt, write the instructor for clarification using the Canvas Inbox.

What are instances of Bias in Algorithms? Follow links from start of article, synthesize and cite the article you are citing.
What is the goal of the technology proposed in this article? How does it work?
Separate fact from fiction. Does this article sound like it is promising? What is the reality? What are the limitations of this technology?
Share your thoughts about the benefits/disadvantages of this technological approach. Would you ever design something like this?

Read the article “ If TiVo Thinks You Are Gay, Here's How to Set It Straight”:
Synthesize the article:
Summarize the article.
Identify the social & ethical issues discussed in the article.
Discuss two advantages and two disadvantages of personalization.
Do you think this is a source of bias? Which person or couple interviewed do you most identify with and why? How do you feel when a system “recognizes” you?
In terms of algorithmic bias, what has changed (if anything) since this article was written? Explain.
Cite the sources as per instructions in step 1.c of page 2.
How the Internet Keeps Poor People in Poor Neighborhoods article
Read the article “ How the internet keeps poor people in poor neighborhoods”:
Synthesize the article:
Summarize the article
Identify the ethical dilemmas brought up in the article.
Do you think that sites like Facebook and Craigslist should regulate discriminatory posts or be held liable? Why or why not?
The article ends by stating that the same algorithms that create prejudice could be altered to create the opposite effect. Do you think that this is an effective solution? What could be done to further right the issue.
