How have my views on deviance and crime and criminological theory changed my professional goals and aspirations? As an aspiring security analyst, my professional goals and aspirations has shifted tremendously my view of deviance and crime and criminological theory. As we learned deviance means any behavior that violates social norms, and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society where it can be either criminal or non-criminal. Learning this definition of insists gave insight to something that happens in country that most people are able to associate a term to. We also defined crime or criminality as a style of strategic behavior characterized by self-centeredness, indifference to the suffering and needs of others, and low self-control. Learning these criminological terms and giving examples throughout this course has given clear and concise insight in being able to relate and identify crime to today’s society. It is my belief that being able to understand and identify these things as a professional I will be able to help those who may not know how to identify and even possibly use these theory to help reduce the amount of crime in not only my community but on a state level. Eventually working my way to be a social worker, these theory and forms will keep me in touch with how crime is formed and is committed. I noticed while researching throughout this class a lot of the different terminologies and theory are also noted or research in sociology. Which having taken sociology, I learn that it is the study of society and how society adapt and react to different situations. If we are honest, in today’s society deviance like the use of marijuana, which in some states is probably one of the main criminal offenses, know the information that we learned in this class will help decrease these criminal acts. So in saying that, as a professional the deviance and crime and criminological theories we learn in this class can benefit not on my professional goals and aspirations but anyone who has a heart for reducing the amount of crime and criminal activity within our community, state, and country.
