It is so many different things that can be related to stress it can be work-related and the individual factors that are likely to cause stress and fatigue in law enforcement poor management inadequate of broken equipment excessive overtime rotation shifts regular duties family and relationship problem and the biggest one financial problems.    The good news is that the importance of reducing job-related stress is not going unnoticed by agencies and even the highest level of federal government. In fact, the federal government responded to this problem Omnibus Crime Act where the president and congress recognized the severity of the problem and mandated a federal government response. As a result of this legislation, the National Institute of Justice was assigned the task of sponsoring research on police stress, establishing pilot programs to help officers and departments deal with police stress, and conducting program evaluations on current programs in an effort to support state and local efforts. I feel that with higher education that you are better equip to deal with the problems you are able to understand and sit back and think how can this affect me in a certain way.   For those aspiring to management or executive positions (captain, major, assistant chief/sheriff, deputy chief/sheriff or even chief or sheriff), a degree may or not be required, but it will certainly reduce the competition. Consider the complexity of today’s policing – managing millions of dollars in budgets, training academies, supplies, equipment, forensic labs, personnel, legal and mandated requirements, court decisions and policing diverse communities. Performing the basic police mission at the same time is a daunting role for anyone.
