Analysis and Critique of Literature Review

Kelsey Allard Crowder’s dissertation illustrates the effect of family stress on the mental health of a child. Arguably, family stress largely facilitates emotional distress that may prove detrimental to the developmental process of a child. Stereotypically, it is evident that children who come from high-conflict societies or families are highly receptive to a slow developmental process due to increased emotional distress, as compared to their counterparts who come from a tranquil and nurturing environment. The purpose of this analysis would be to address the relationship between emotional distress and the development process of a child, and support such position with facts from the dissertation. An organizational map will prove important in providing pillars for this analysis such as the conceptual foundation, the relevance, how the author synthesizes the literature, and a profound analysis and recommendation would help in assessing the position taken after a profound analysis is done.

Research Question

The research question incorporated in this study is whether the Family Stress Model can explain the imminent effect of the mental health of kids. In this argument, the author clearly indicates that the model explains why economic hardships has a direct effect on economic pressures which lead to parental emotional distress and lead to low nurturing as well as uninvolved parenting. Crowder (2013) explicitly states that uninvolved parenting due to emotional distress both in parents and kids often disrupts developmental outcomes and processes for children. Crowder (2013) also lists associated developmental problems such as Depressive Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Hyperactivity/Attention-Deficit Disorder.

Conceptual Foundation

Crowder (2013) utilizes statistics from verified institutions such as the US Census Bureau to conduct the study. she applies both quantitative and qualitative aspects of research in addition to conducting an extensive research on secondary sources that address the same issue. However, the author chooses to focus more on the qualitative aspect of the study to investigate the socio-emotional development of children amidst social problems and anxieties. The facts given by the author based on the Family Stress Model that encompasses all aspects of the study, and supporting arguments that augment the basis of the dissertation.

Relevance of the Literature to the Research Question

The literature review is relevant and profoundly addresses the research question in context. Furthermore, the author divides the literature review into subsections that distinctively and explicitly explain the problem. The first part addresses the Family Stress Model and why parents often tend to experience emotional distress which is directly experienced by their children. The second part and the third part address the economic pressure and its relation to child mental health as well as economic pressure and its effects on the family. Crowder addresses these issues systematically and matters incorporated in these categories flow systematically as they transition from one to the next one.

Synthesis of Literature

The author applies largely the data and information provided by the US Census Bureau to base her facts. This institution is accredited and its sets of data are authentic, and constantly updated. She also utilizes secondary sources and matches the arguments given with her own, as well as information obtained from raw sources such as the US Census Bureau to build an argument. In this section, it is important to identify complementary methods of decoding literature that will go hand in hand with the equation models that used to analyze the results later in the study. Furthermore, important correlations between different sources should be established in a bid to identify any missing or ambiguous information and conduct further research to validate them.

Discussions/Recommendations

The Family Stress Model is just a pathway that directs the analyzers of the dissertation and the readers towards the problem of a child’s mental health that caused by conflicts and problems in social settings. Even though there is a remote relationship between the economic pressure and a child’s mental health. However, the major aspect in consideration is the emotional distress from parents that represent high conflict situations and in turn leads to harsh or uncontrolled parenting that heavily influences the developmental process of a child. The study also addresses different types of disorders to augment the position and base the facts stated by the author. A profound analysis of the text clearly indicates that there is a direct subsisting relationship between the conflicts children face and their effect on developmental process as compared to their counterparts. Even though there is no comparison, such facts and avenues of contrast have been assumed due to the specific objectives and extensive nature of the study. As part of the recommendation, it would be important to delve deep into this matter and understand the psychological part in play when emotional distress tends to defunctionalize the proper running of the development process in children. The author also implicitly indicates that the psychological context of the study needs to be addressed on its own as it is extensive.

Concisely, Crowder offers a profound analysis on the effects of emotional distress on developmental process. However, she broadly illustrates this position by showing the relationship between the Family Stress Model and the development of the mental health of a child. The research is extensive and profoundly analyzed to illustrate this position.
