Background

· Alcohol is the world's third largest risk factor for disease and contributes to 4% of the global burden of disease

· It is estimated that 2.5 million deaths each year are directly attributable to alcohol

· 9% of alcohol related deaths per year are in the 15- to 29-year age group being

· Blood alcohol level of 0.08% is now the legal intoxication level in all 50 states

· A standard drink is 0.5 oz of alcohol and equals 12-oz beer, one 5-oz glass of wine, or one 1.5-oz shot of distilled spirits.

· Excessive drinking is defined as consuming 5 or more standard drinks per day for men and 4 or more drinks per day for women.

· Alcohol affects an individual of cognitive, biological, and social well being

· Young Adults ages 18-25 are at high risk of alcohol use disorder and unintentional injury caused by excessive alcohol consumption

· Alcohol use amongst adolescents and young adults has been linked to binge drinking, smoking, and substance abuse

· Excessive drinking at such a young age, puts them at a greater rick for alcoholism disease

· At the ages 18-25, the brain is still developing, and alcohol abuse can hinder proper brain development

· Young adults often misperceive the amount of alcohol it takes for the body to become incapacitated and drunk

· Higher rates of high-risk drinking among ethnic minorities are reported for Native Americans and Hispanics.

· Native Americans and Hispanic young adults have the highest prevalence for excessive drinking.

· Native Americans of both genders have the highest prevalence of weekly heavy drinking.

· Hispanic men have the highest prevalence of daily heavy drinking.

Issues

· Alcohol use amongst young adults can often lead to binge drinking and cause numerous health issues.

· Binge drinking has been known to lead to alcohol poisoning, unintentional injuries, suicide, hypertension, pancreatitis, sexually transmitted diseases, and meningitis, among other disorders.

· after consumption of this amount or more, individuals are at greater risk for exhibiting serious alcohol-related problems (e.g., vandalism, fights, injuries, drunk driving, trouble with police, etc.) and subsequent negative health, social, economic, or legal consequences

· The consumption of alcohol allows delayed auditory and verbal memory deficits that were related to task difficulty.

· Alcohol is sold in almost all gas stations, grocery stores, and there are plenty of liquor stores in highly accessible areas.

· Current efforts to assist in preventing alcohol abuse amongst young adults

· Increasing alcohol tax rates; taxes has been raised on beer, the quantity of alcoholic beverage, the price of alcoholic beverages

· Laws have been made to enforce recording of purchaser information when selling beer kegs to discourage beer service to underage individuals

· Not allowing the sale of alcoholic beverages after 2:00 am and before 10:00 am

· Liquor stores are closed and do not sale alcohol on Sundays

· Stores are becoming more strict on policies to check ID before allowing the sale of alcohol

· Uber, Lyft, and other taxi services have increased to discourage people from driving while drunk

Biblical Applications

· Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.. Proverbs 20:1

· Alcohol is a strong drink which can be raging and take control over one’s body.

· God wants us to be wise and not be deceived and think that alcohol is not a strong drink.

· And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;. Ephesians 5:8

· Do not drink fill your body with excessive alcohol, but instead be filled with the Spirit.

· Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. Romans 13:13

· We are to walk honestly and not drunk.

· What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1 Corinthians 6:19

· God wants us to treat our body like a temple and keep it Holy. That includes not introducing foul things into our body and keeping it healthy.

· Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:10

· Those that are stealing, coveting, and drinking to the point where drunk are not pleasing to God.
