Writing and Assessing an Argumentative Essay The goal of this unit is for the student to write a coherent and reasoned argumentative essay. This final unit lays out the logical, criterial, structural, and 7 stylistic requirements, so that the student might accomplish this goal. It also proposes strategies for organizing an argumentative essay.

In the final essay you will demonstrate your ability to choose clear and correct language, construct a sound argument, and recognize and avoid possible fallacies and irrational techniques of persuasion in arguments.

You will demonstrate this by:

• Choosing any current event or issue you are interested in

• Submitting your topic to the professor for approval by midterm

• Defining the terminology connected to your issue

• Explaining your claim and arguing for it

• Providing evidence

• Identifying one or more possible counterarguments

• Refuting the counterarguments

  You can find more detailed information about the final essay by checking announcements throughout the semester. The essay also aims to improve your general writing skills, practice academic writing, and learn how to properly cite sources. Since you will need to refer to more than one text or source, you will be led to learn about academic and credible sources and how to use multiple sources to elaborate an issue. Finally, students are responsible for submitting their final essay to BlackBoard using Turnitin. This is not only a chance to work with educational technology, but also a means of preventing plagiarism . Turnitin will flag any kind of plagiarized text. If you are found plagiarizing others’ work, you will receive no credit for the assignment.

1) The topic must be approved by your professor in advance.

2) Use at least three credible sources (see:  Is My Source Credible?

3) It must be 3 pages (1500-1800 words).

4) Should be typewritten.

5) Create an outline or diagram of your ideas.

6) Write the introduction and your thesis statement.

7) Write the body, the main points, and the subpoints. 

8) Include supportive and negative views.

9) Conclude your essay.

10) Mention your selective bibliography.
