Some culturally adaptive mechanisms Steve could take while counseling Riza could be taking more of a behavioral or humanistic approach. The goal would be to make her feel comfortable and trying to understand the reason of her behaviors and beliefs. The book stated, “Cultural adaptions to counseling should be as specific to the client and the client’s cultural worldview as possible; counselors should avoid implementing a generic approach across various racial and ethnic groups” (Counseling Across Cultures, 2016). When dealing with Riza, Steve should take a more therapeutic approach in understanding her culture and create a setting of cultural empathy, open-mindedness, emotional stability, and social flexibility, instead of not wanting to counsel her because of their differences. In better understanding for their counselor/client relationship, he could use particular cultural words, sayings, acknowledgement, arts, etc. He should have counseling sessions with her as she express information of her culture for him to learn and get a better understanding of her beliefs. Steve could consult with other professionals for advice on how to cope with her culture instead of being intimated. These adaptions could help both Steve and Riza learn about each other.
