CRITERIA-REFERENCED VS. NORM-REFERENCED GRADING

CRITERIA-REFERENCED GRADING CONSIDERATIONS

1. How valid is the instrument on which the grade is based? How reliable is it?

Note: Criterion-referenced grading may or may not be appropriate if the measures are not accurate or fair.

2. How select is the group being evaluated?

If the group is very homogeneous, norm-referencing is inappropriate because there is not really a distribution of skills across the group.

3. How critical is the content being evaluated?

If it is critical, criterion-referencing is favored.

4. Does future work depend on the content?

If yes, criterion-referencing will, at a minimum, ensure that passing students have prerequisites for future work.

NORM-REFERENCED GRADING (GRADING ON THE CURVE)

A Achievement of all major and minor goals.

B Achievement of all major goals, and some minor goals.

C Achievement of all major goals, but few minor goals.

D Achievement of some major goals, but student is not prepared for advanced work.

E/F None of the major goals achieved.
