What is the triad of criminology and how do they influence eachother
Understanding crime, explaining crime, and resonding to crime. We first must
understand crime in order to explain it.Once we can explain why crimes occur, as well
as why people commit crimes, we will be able to respond to the crime better.
What is crime?
Crime is any act or omission, which the state says the crime is criminal, and to which the
state attaches consequences. The defemition is constantly fluctuating , and can be
defined differently be each indiviual.
What assumptions underlie the classical school of criminoloy , according to the
huff reading?
People have free will in making decisions . Punishments can be detturence for crime as
long as punishment is proportional , fits the crime and is carried out promptly.
Becarias six tenets , according to the Huff reading
1- motivation underlying all social action must be the utilitarian value of that action.
2-focus on the act and the extent of damage, not intent
3-prevention of crime is more important than its punishment
4-secret accusations and torture should be elimnated and the trial should serve justice
5-that the only valid purpose of punishment is detterence, not social revenge.
6- incarceration should be widely used, classification developed to prevent haphazardly
mixing all types of inmates
What is deviance?
any violation of social norms, values, or expectations. changes over time and is different
throughout cultures. If you break expectations you are considered deviant.
What are social rules and norms? How do these concepts come to be given meaning?
Social rules and norms are unofficial rules created by the members of society. People of
society enforce these norms. An example would be someone clipping his or her toenails
on a bus.
What is social social control
From above: clipping toenails on the bus is not illegal, yet people will glare and give
them dirty looks, usually making them stop. These actions of civilians help enforce the
social rules.
