CREATIVE PROJECT GUIDELINES

Choosing one play from the list below, you will devise a hypothetical production concept that includes the thoughtful execution of one design element from the production. The design element can be represented by a costume rendering, a photo collage of a scenic design, a ground plan, or a photograph of a model you built. Your project will include the following elements.

1. Choose one play from the text book (not read in class) from the following list:

Medea Hamlet The Rover Life is a Dream A Doll’s House The Good Woman of Setzuan Fences Lost Venditos M. Butterfly 2. Write a brief 1,500-1,700 word typed paper that includes the following:

a. A BRIEF plot synopsis that discusses the major plot points and important characters

b. A description of the world of the play as articulated by the playwright c. A discussion of the relevant themes of the play and how they fit into

the cultural context in which the play was written d. A concept statement describing the overall look and feel of your

hypothetical production of the play. e. The concept description will go on to include an explanation of what

type of space you intent to stage this production (indoor, outdoor, black box, etc.) major design elements, the setting (time and place) for your production (do you intend to stage it as written or change the historical period and location) who your intended audience is, and how you want them to feel after watching this production. Remember, you need to appropriately justify your choices based on the themes you want to emphasize in the play.

f. Lastly, include a brief paragraph explaining your design element, why you made those choices and how this piece fits into the rest of the production.

3. Include a visual representation of your design work. This could take a variety of forms, but it must be visual.

4. Upload your paper and design work onto the message board. To receive full credit, you must read and respond to at minimum of 3 other creative projects in the thread.
