(100 points for creative object and 25 for presentation)

Concept:

Choose one quotation from the list below. These quotations are provocative, i.e. they challenge one to think or look at life in different ways.

1. “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.” Voltaire

2. “Denial is a save now, pay later scheme.” Gavin de Becker

3. “Resentment is like drinking poison and hoping it will kill your enemies.” Nelson Mandela

4. “The present was an egg laid by the past that had the future inside its shell.” Zora Neale Hurston

5. “Wealth consists not in having great possessions but in having few wants.” Epictetus

6. “It is by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure.” Joseph Campbell

7. “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten we belong to each other.” Mother Teresa

8. “Under a government which imprisons unjustly, the true place for a just man is also a prison.” Henry David Thoreau

9. “A physicist is just an atom’s way of looking at itself.” Niels Bohr

10. “The shifts of fortune test the reliability of friends.” Cicero

11. “The worthiest people are the most injured by slander, as is the best fruit which the birds have been pecking at.” Jonathan Swift

12. “To go beyond is as wrong as to fall short.” Confucius

13. “You cannot step into the same river for new waters are always flowing on to you.” Heraclitus

14. “An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come.” Victor Hugo

15. “Strangeness is a necessary ingredient in beauty.” Charles Baudelaire

16. “The only true paradise is a paradise lost.” Marcel Proust

17. “In the practice of tolerance, one’s enemy is the best teacher.” Dalai Lama

18. “Kings are the slaves of history.” Leo Tolstoy

Your Assignment:

· Make an artwork that expresses one of the quotations in a poster form. This is your personal response to the quotation.

· A rough guide is 22 x 30 inches. It needs to be big enough for your classmates to see it when you are presenting

· If you want, you can make a painting, but it must be large enough to be seen by your classmates.

Requirements:

· You must use the whole quotation and the author’s name in the artwork itself. You should not put the quotation on a matted frame or on the back of the work.

· This artwork should be original, you can make a collage and/or you may do painting, photograph, or drawing. The work should be big enough to be seen by your classmates when presenting it.

· This piece must be an original work made specifically for this assignment. You cannot do a PowerPoint or digital work. It must be something tactile.

· Put your name on the back of the work.

Generating Ideas:

· Let the words in the quotation become a springboard for images.

· Does the quotation bring up particular colors, shapes, spatial arrangements, forms or scenes?

· How do you relate to the quotation personally?

· Does the quotation relate to class material? How so?

· Which word or words should be emphasized and how so?

· How could the way the words are presented on the paper add to the meaning of the quotation?

Grading:

· This project is designed to get you to think and act creatively; therefore, originality in conceptualization and execution will strongly impact the resulting grade.

· In addition, the project should convey the depth of thought and time and effort undertaken to make it.

· Remember that art is a form of communication. So you should think about how the work appears to others.

· Sloppy work (uneven edges, parts peeling off, low quality printing of the images) will receive a low grade. Please, NO GLITTER; it gets everywhere.

Presentation:

Your presentation should include the following:

1. Your full name

2. Why you chose the quotation and what it means to you.

3. Your creative process, telling us how the aesthetic choices you made express your interpretation of the quotation.

4. What you learned/gained from either the quotation itself and/or the creative process.

Because of time limitations, we only have five minutes per each presentation. This means that you must be prepared and ready to present your project in the most economical manner possible. In addition, work on speaking clearly, confidently, and slowly enough for your audience to follow you.
