Creating Excellent Outlines Using the Layered Funnel Method

Press enter or click to view image in full sizeFor years, I have been helping my students write using funnels. They are particularly useful when writing a literature review or a methodology review for a scholarly publication like a dissertation or a peer-reviewed article because they give us a very specific way of formulating our thoughts and then getting them into the most cohesive order so that the work reads with a flow and cohesion that allows for the concepts and ideas to be delivered naturally.

Here is the way that this kind of funnel system of writing works:
Step 1: Start with the broadest area first and write about it
Step 2: As you move through the funnel, recognize that each layer of the funnel will be more specific and focused.
Step 3: In addition, each layer you move into has layers. So you can begin to finesse where in the layers the specific details and connectors need to be so that each layer is important to the work that you are writing.
Step 4: As you get to the end of the tunnel, you should write to the most specific areas and details at that point, so the connectors become extremely important to the reader so that “Ah ha” moments can occur.

Step 5: Write a conclusion that ties together all the major points and allows the reader to walk away with everything they need from the piece. It is like a look back to see everything that we discovered together.
Step 6: Make sure that all of your references and coordinated quotations are triangulated in every layer and sublayer of the funnel. If you have sublayers, triangulate their references and citations first, then the larger layers will also be covered.

First: Every layer in your funnel is a large heading
Second: Every layer within a layer is a subheading, and the subheadings should be logical and cohesive.
Third: Triangulate the literature at the subheading level when subheadings are used; then, you will always have enough scaffolding from the literature.
This will give you an outstanding outline with plenty of literature scaffolding and help you deliver the work the funnel method is designed to deliver. It all starts with a funnel, then a great outline, then an excellent paper!
