Digital forensics, also known as computer forensics, refers to a unique way of conducting an investigation on certain crimes or attacks with the help of scientific techniques. Its main purpose is to conduct research and comprehensive investigation as well as to conduct an analysis of the information on computer systems for possible evidence or a lead on the case. It plays the role of accumulating information from digital artifacts such as networks, computers, cloud, and servers. The process also involves collecting information from SMSs, images, and deleted files. In a nutshell, the purposes of computer forensics are the preservation of the state of a digital device, retrieving information as well as analyzing the state of the device (Kävrestad, 2018).
Mikayla Munn was a university student at Manchester University who gave birth to a baby, which she later killed. She performed this act in the dormitory bathtub, where she drowned her baby after giving birth. Investigations took place intending to find out what exactly happened to the baby. In an effort to defend herself, Mikayla said that she was completely unaware of what had happened. According to her, she did not become aware of her pregnancy as well as the occurrence of the labor pains. She explained that the labor pains were felt when taking birth, and so she did not notice the arrival of the baby. However, further investigation proved that she had conducted some research on Google using her computer researching ways to perform "at-home abortion," as well as how to cut the umbilical cord of a baby. This only left her guilty of murder, and she was therefore sentenced to 9 years imprisonment. In the above case, digital forensics came in handy in proving that Mikayla was actually responsible for the death of the baby despite her denial of the accusations. Had there been no comprehensive investigation done with the help of digital forensics, Mikayla would probably have walked scot-free if only her story was to be put into consideration. As a result, with the help of digital forensics, she was brought to justice (Le-Khac, 2019).
