CR003 Access, Equity, and Promoting Change Apply strategies to promote access, equity, and positive social change for young children, families, and the early childhood field.

Prerequisites: Before beginning this Competency, you must complete the following Competencies:

 CECS CD001: Theories of Child Development

 CECS CD002: Knowledge of the Child Development Continuum

Assessment Type: Performance Task

Competency Description:

Early childhood educators have an active role in supporting equity and working to promote positive outcomes for all children. Accomplishing critical tasks associated with equity and social justice requires carefully looking at our personal biases and learning strategies that help us overcome these biases.

This Assessment is a Performance Task in which you will explore your own biases and how your personal lens can potentially impact your interactions with others. You will develop classroom and organizational strategies for addressing bias and supporting equity. In addition, you will explore the potential benefits of these efforts on young children and their families. In addition, you will take on the role of an early childhood educator at Madison Place Preschool who is working to address issues related to access, equity, and positive change, both in your classroom and at Madison Place Preschool. This Assessment is comprised of four major parts:

 Part 1: Overcoming Bias

 Part 2: Addressing Bias and Promoting Equity in Early Childhood Classroom

 Part 3: Access, Equity, and Promoting Change in Early Childhood Organizations

 Part 4: The Positive Impacts of Promoting Access, Equity, and Change Assessment submission length: 9-12 pages

Sub-Competencies:

o Apply strategies for overcoming personal bias and promoting equity and social justice.

o Apply strategies to address bias and to promote equity in early childhood classrooms.

o Apply strategies to advocate for children, families, and communities.

o Describe organizations that promote access, equity, and social change for young children and

families.

o Explain the benefits of positive social change in early childhood contexts and in the larger society.
