ELSE 6073 Educational Procedures for Moderate to Profound Disabilities Session 5: Specialized Health Care Procedures – 75 pts.

Overview: While in school, students with special health care needs, who are integrated in the routine of the school day, require specific procedures. Special training is needed by all educators and school personnel who come in daily contact with the student to ensure proper administration of the specialized health care procedure(s). Graduate candidates will examine four of the more frequently used health care procedures among students with profound disabilities in the regular school setting.

Guidelines: • Read Chapter 10 of required textbook: Understanding and Meeting the Health Care

Needs of Students with Severe Disabilities • Watch the YouTube Videos posted below • Design a tri-fold handout/pamphlet which includes an overview of Specialized Health

Care. o Your tri-fold will identify the following procedures, what disability or health

impairment is each procedure associated with (i.e. Spina Bifida = CIC), and their impact on educators, students, and peers in the educational setting; information from the videos should be used to support, illustrate, or provide examples of information in pamphlets.

▪ Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC), ▪ Shunt Monitoring, ▪ Tube Feeding, ▪ Tracheostomy Care

o Pamphlet should include a list of resources and websites parents/professionals may refer to for more information (you may use those listed below as well as others you find).

o You may use other resources to provide relevant information in your pamphlet. • This pamphlet should be of such value that you could share it with incoming SPED Teachers and parents within your district.
