cover letter
Cover Letter: 100 points (10% of your overall grade)
Your Task
Using the job posting you picked for your Key Value Paragraph, you now must write a strong, focused, formal, and professional cover letter. This letter must:
· Clearly target the job posting (i.e., emphasize the strengths, accomplishments, and qualifications noted in the job ad)
Cover Letter Structure: Thesis + Topic Sentence(s) + Unified Paragraphs
· You must organize information with a “thesis.” Thus, your first paragraph should end with a thesis-type sentence, asserting the one or two experiences you will highlight and prove with specific evidence in your letter, and your fitness for the job.
· One of them MUST be your “fixed” Value Proposition Paragraph (incorporating my feedback)
· All paragraphs must be unified: they must stay ONLY on the topic asserted in the topic sentence – NO TOPIC DRIFT.
Format
· Your letter must be limited to one page single spaced, so make every sentence count.
· Your cover letter must demonstrate why you would be a good fit for the position. It should not be written to say why the position would be a good fit for you.
· Your letter must be formatted as a business letter. See the information on proper cover letter format on the next page. DO NOT NEGLECT THE CORRECT FORMAT—YOU WILL LOSE UP TO 25 POINTS FOR INCORRECT FORMATTING. Note that because letters are single spaced, you should add a space between each paragraph, which means you then do not need to indent each paragraph.
What You’ll Turn In
· Your cover letter
· A copy/paste of your job posting

Dear XXXXX,
Introduction should start by explaining how you heard about the position. Second sentence establishes why you are seeking THIS job; what is motivating you to apply to this gig. Third sentence is a thesis statement that asserts your experience/fitness for the job.
Internal paragraph. This is a fixed version of your Key Value Paragraph (after you have taken my feedback into consideration).
Internal paragraph. Claim sentence. Evidence (bulk of paragraph, including results). How will your experience/skill help the employer?
Closing should reiterate your fitness for the position, kindly ask to be contacted, and thank the reader.
Sincerely,
Your Name
