Purpose:
Cover Letter
The purpose of this assignment is to introduce yourself to an organization, demonstrate your interest in the company or a specific vacancy, draw attention to your resume and motivate the reader to interview you. Often this letter is the first contact you have with a prospective employer.
Preparation Instructions:
1. Formatting:
a. Compose your Cover Letter in Microsoft Word.
b. The Cover Letter should be formatted and typed using Times New Roman, 12-point font, and one-inch margins (no exceptions).
c. Be sure to use action verbs to describe professional skills and experiences.
2. Grammar and Punctuation:
a. So, why does grammar matter? Business communication is very important and, as much of what we do is in the written form, GRAMMAR MATTERS!! The Cover Letter will be graded for grammar, spelling, and punctuation, so use all methods to proofread your resume prior to submitting it. I recommend using GRAMMARLY before submission to help with catching errors.
b. Submit the Cover Letter to the Cover Letter drop box in the assignments tab.
Content Instructions:
1. You will select a company that you would one day like to apply for and address the letter to the HR manager. You should use the position selected for your Mock Interview to complete this assignment.
2. Your cover letter should include all of the elements from the attached cover letter rubric.
Submission Instructions:
· Save this assignment as “Yourname_coverletter.doc.” (i.e., johnsmith_coverletter.doc)
· Access the Assignments link located on the Course Menu to upload the final document as an attachment to the Cover Letter drop box. This must be completed by the due date listed on the Course Schedule.
· Refer to the grading rubric in the drop box for specifics on grading criteria.
