Summary of action

You are required to work on a research project with the following major action points:

· Choose a project management related topic which you would like to investigate further, e.g., risk management, stakeholder management, change management etc (please see the list of possible topics in weekly session plan). We would advise you to start thinking about the topic to investigate as soon as possible.

· Conduct appropriate research in order to acquire knowledge about the chosen topic. You are expected to relate the chosen topic(s) in a real life project context in order to conclude lessons for future improvement. It doesn’t matter if the project has finished but it should be reasonably complex to reflect the need of applying project management techniques. The knowledge you gain and information you provide will be a useful preparation for the exam.

· Produce a formal individual report building on the main points discovered in the research.

1. The Objectives of the Course Work:

In the light of the academic content and practical applications of the project management subject, the design and conduct of the assessed course work aims to achieve the following objectives:

· to give students an opportunity to experience, ‘hands-on’, the challenges of working on a specified task (a research project ) under the constraints of, time, availability of human and material resources.

· to enhance the knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues in project management by researching a selected topic relevant to projects and project management in contemporary organisations and markets, and producing a written report summarising the findings.

· to provide a learning opportunity to encounter and deal with the processes of problem-solving and decision making in a project situation, in terms of clarifying the objectives and choosing the most effective methods to deliver the project outcome and achieve the project goal in a meaningful way.

2. The context and content of the task, performance criteria and assessment process:

Each student is required to engage in an individual research project (up to 2500 words, +/- 10%) on a topic of their choice, relevant to projects and project management in contemporary organisations and markets (it could be an on-going project or a completed one). You should show evidence of academic and field research including primary and/or reliable secondary data collection in investigating the project from a specific perspective. This must satisfy the following criteria:

· Demonstrate understanding and relevance of the chosen project.

· Demonstrate research into and understanding of appropriate literature from a specific perspective (a project management related topic).

· Ability to analyse project and apply appropriate project management tools & techniques, complexity and its implications.

· Shown evidence of academic and field research including primary and/or reliable secondary data collection in investigating the project from a specific perspective.

· Demonstrate work to an academically high standard in a report format (including correct referencing, structure, style and overall presentation).

3. Coursework Mark

The coursework mark accounts for 50% of the final mark for the module. The exam mark contributes remaining 50%.

Marking Criteria

A detailed breakdown of the marking criteria used by staff to assess this coursework is provided at the end of this document. When writing your assignment it is useful to keep in mind these assessment criteria and the weightings allocated to each. These will help to guide your efforts in writing the essay.
