Course Description
This course examines the development and administration of relational databases through the
stages of the database application life cycle, advanced topics in database administration, and
recent trends in database technologies.
Course Objectives
Describe the database application lifecycle and identify its activities. Describe the tools and techniques used in database design. Identify the roles of data administrators, database administrators, and database
designers and discuss how they interact with users. Apply the Entity-Relationship (ER) model, the Enhanced Entity-Relationship (EER)
model, and the normalization technique to database design. Develop conceptual, logical, and physical database designs. Identify methods for improving database performance. Identify database security issues and describe how they can be addressed. Describe how transaction management, concurrency control, and recovery services
maintain the consistent state of a database. Form queries using relational algebra and relational calculus. Describe the process of query optimization.
Identify the concepts and issues involved with distributed databases. Describe the issues involved in integrating databases into the Web environment and the
technologies that are involved. Describe the importance of XML and its potential impact on database development. Explain the basic concepts of data warehousing and data mining.
