The Product—Classmate PC
A program called “Intel’s World Ahead Program” coordinated by the organization Intel, aims to enhance lives by accelerating admittance to uncompromised technology for everyone and anyplace in the world. Intel focused on people in the world’s developing communities which integrates and extends Intel’s endeavors to advance progress in accessibility, connectivity, education and content. Intel’s goal is to provide opportunities for people worldwide to participate in today’s global economy through information and communications technologies by supporting substantial progress in connecting the next billion people to a world of opportunity. For this reason, Intel is developing a minimal expense full-featured PC for first-time computer clients and customized PC to address the special needs of geographical regions called Classmate PC. The value scope of the Classmate PC goes around $250 to $350.
As for this assignment, the product will have an advanced commercialized version of the Classmate PC to be sold at a retail price of $300. In this project, Intel is promoting the effective use of technology by collaborating with local governments and organizations on digital inclusion programs. As well, as preparing 10 million additional educators on the effective use of technology in education. Classmate PC has been demonstrated students are more drawn and able to develop 21st-century skills and teachers are more productive and efficient. Also, family interaction and parental involvement are increased as well as communities are better able to meet the educational needs of all students and economic progress helps bridge the digital divide.
Specifications
The current Intel-Powered Convertible Classmate PC offers have dual mode which means it can be converted from a traditional laptop to a tablet PC to allow children to write and draw more naturally. When open like a traditional laptop, the screen can swivel 180 degrees for sharing to be easier. The Classmate comes in 1.6 gigahertz Intel Atom processor with 1 gigabyte to a max of 2 gigabyte and have 60 gigabyte hard disk drive with PATA 1.8-inch ZIF socket. Also, the screen allows for writing or drawing directly on the screen and a built-in camera that can rotates 180 degrees to enable students to interact in new way. The keyboard of the Classmate PC is water-resistant which shows the durability of the laptop for students and children.
Intel announced that the Classmate PC would run either Linux or Windows XP Professional. Intel is not using Windows XP Embedded as initially planned. Intel has been actively working with various international and local Linux distributions in various countries. Currently, Intel powered Classmate PC has been running Linux distributions under Mandriva Linux and Metasys.
