According to the legend, Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego in the Guadalupe village which is presently Madero Gustavo near the city of Mexico in 1531. Juan Diego was having a walk between Tenochtitlan that is currently Mexico and his own village where the Catholic religion was headquartered (Noreen, 512).

After the virgin appearing to him on his way and speaking to him in his native language, the Virgin asked for a shrine to be put up on the spot which is Tepeyac Hill in her name which is currently Mexico City. The virgin appeared to Juan when he was on his way in the Gudalupe village (Noreen, 503).

According to Noreen, (493) when Juan told the bishop and he did not believe him, he asked for a sign then on December 12, the virgin reappeared to Juan Diego asking him to collect tilmatli which is some sort of cloak. This force also led to creation of the city of Mexico that we know today which is a mixture of Spanish and native blood.
