Counseling Project: Case Summary

Client History

The client (Patrick Jane) from the Television show The Mentalist is one of the intriguing tv characters ever because it has numerous character and mystery. The client has a sense of surprise to him that makes him unique and can come up with different scenarios and can jump out with different clues within a short duration and minimal investigation. The concept proves that the client is smart and has a unique way of looking at things that makes him different compared to the other characters in the show. The client is also interesting and stands out compared to the other clients because it is easy for him to introduce humor and jokes into a serious situation and help break the ice. However, on some extent it is also evident that the client has some mental issues that make him a threat and the need to access the counseling to help him cope with the other ongoing activities in his life. the character always seeks to be the smartest individual in the room that is also a problem that requires addressing because it mostly gets him in trouble and denies him friends. Patrick Jane does not have friends and a social life that is not healthy in any setting that makes it a problem and the need for the counseling. The fact that the client wants to appear as the smartest person in the room makes it a problem for the counseling process because he might end taking over the counseling process. It is easy to form rapport with the client because he is highly social and attaches easily but for a short duration thus it will be easy to take advantage of it to ensure that the client respects the counseling session. The counselor has to downplay the issues of the client understanding that it is the only way to help them corporate with the process.

Presenting Problems

Personal functioning

The client is seeking for counselling because they are having a difficult time to find sleep because of the past activities of the serial killer killing his wife and daughter. The client has been downplaying the effects and the toll that the act has had on his life and it might be resulting towards depression. The patient easily disappears into his own thoughts that is not appropriate way for the functioning of the individual making it unhealthy (Williamson, 2013). The deaths of his family were as a result of him taunting the serial killer on live television thus he blames himself several years after their death. The individual is having a difficult time to move on with their life because the dark cloud is revolving above making him burnout seeking for the serial killer.

Patrick is presenting behavioral changes that include restlessness, irritability and social isolation and starting to lose interests in activities that interested him before. The changes are going to the extreme causing insomnia because he ends up struggling with thoughts and end up sleep deprived (Jungers, & Gregoire, 2013). The client is witnessing the changes that are making it worse for the him to leave and operate normally that would then make it easier for him to corporate with the counselling session. As the therapist, it is important to note that Patrick is long overdue for the therapy session because he underwent a tough ordeal that required immediate attention but then he took long to respond that is not appropriate for an individual. People cannot live their lives normally and the fact that the client is stubborn made him think that he can make it without the need for the counselling sessions have made it a challenge but it would be easy to salvage.

Relationships

The client has a bad connection and relationship with others that made it a challenge to keep up a social life. It is clear through the show that the client took time before forming relationships even with the co-workers. The co-workers only served his purposes of work that made it easier for him to keep up with the competition. The measure made it a challenge because he had created a separate world for himself that was not healthy. The client lost his family that shuttered his entire life and thus he did not have a social life and did not want to form new relationships. In addition, the client is not showing any of the social attachments because he believes that the serial killer will come and take them away thus, he is giving himself time until he captures the serial killer. Patrick lived a life as a magician and a mind reader in his previous life that made him popular as a con artist and thus did not give him much friendship. It is evident that the patient had much love for his late wife and counted on her as the friend that her death switched his capabilities of forming a social life. It is evident that the Client is trying to get close with his supervisor Teresa Lisbon but also, he maintains the distance because of the fear of the serial killer Red John. The concept will make it a challenge to form a relationship with the patient but it will be essential to make the patient understand that the patient-counselor relationship is essential.

Occupational Functioning

The fact that Patrick views himself as the smartest individual in the room causes him numerous problems with the clients and bosses. The client does not have clear boundaries and he would easily depict that he will follow the truth wherever it goes and he does not regard the laws and policies in place that mostly cause him trouble. The fact that he closes numerous cases made it impossible for the bosses to dismiss him but he had numerous problems with them that supervisor Teresa Lisbon played the role of a baby sitter because she had to make sure that he is in line. When in the field, Patrick does not heed the words and the social norms or respect the demands of the clients and he would easily enter places that he should not just to solve a case and he would do so without warranties. The measure was taunting and taking a toll on the co-workers that had to cover up and take heat on behalf of him to make sure that they do not terminate him. The fact that Patrick was a free spirit even before joining the task force made it a challenge for him to keep up with the rules and he wanted the other people to cope with his issues but he would not bend his will to the law or the wishes of the others.
