Misunderstandings Outsiders have about the U.S.A. Comment by Microsoft Office User: Center this!
There are a lot of misunderstandings between individuals outside of living in the United States of America. Many of them see it as a quality of life upgrade, while some see it as a war front. Comment by Microsoft Office User: Um, WHERE is your introductory paragraph that concludes with a thesis statement?
Firstly, most people know little about the U.S. through the internet and cable news, a friend of mine who has a U.S. visa once told me that everyone in the U.S. has a gun and is walking the street with it, and he backed it up with facts from some news outlets claiming that in 2020 alone more than 8 million guns were sold, he said he doubts if he ever would come over. It truly was an alarming figure to understand. All I could say to him was that since I got here, I haven't seen a gun from any civilian, and that it's still safe. Comment by Microsoft Office User: Avoid this signal word. Use the models I provided. Comment by Microsoft Office User: CS Comment by Microsoft Office User: CS Comment by Microsoft Office User: Good job using personal examples to explain the misunderstanding! You did not support that particular topic sentence, though. You just jumped right into your example. And I hate to have to tell you this, but those figures are probably accurate. Post-COVID, the numbers of gun sales are actually much higher. More people carry than you realize!
Another misconception they have is about the economy. Everybody thinks that America is heaven on earth where everyone is financially buoyant. The fact that a dollar is about 400 times higher than Naira makes it possible for outsiders to see the USA as gold. Failure to think about what American money takes, such as rent, insurance, utility bills, and bills of repair, makes it a complete misconception. When they hear a person earn 1500 a week, they go into instant conversion to naira; consequently, they label such an earner "a millionaire" because of the financial strength of the dollar, it's a misunderstanding they will not understand. Comment by Microsoft Office User: Who is everybody? Comment by Microsoft Office User: Where is that from? Comment by Microsoft Office User: Truth. They don’t see how far a dollar gets a person in the U.S. You can’t even buy a drink with a dollar!
Lastly, most people in other countries think Americans are arrogant, loud and like the president always wants to control everything. A lot of my Ukrainian friends said they didn't like the presence of an average American when I was in Ukraine, because they didn't feel comfortable around them. It was easy for them to say. However, when we were transferred to an English hostel where we met a lot of American students, the impression shifted. After that semester, they concluded Americans are one of the coolest people to be around with. Comment by Microsoft Office User: Ahhhh, that’s somewhat true as well! We have our pockets of ignorance, for sure! Comment by Microsoft Office User: When were you in the Ukraine?
In summary, most people tend to have some misunderstandings about what they don’t know. Whenever I hear people talk about places they don’t know, I urge them to read a lot more on them before concluding, or better still, take a trip to the place and have a better understanding.
