Psychodynamic approaches

The psychodynamic approach includes all the theories in psychology that see human functioning based upon the interaction of drives and forces within the person, particularly unconscious, and between the different structures of the personality. ... Freud's psychoanalysis is both a theory and therapy

Relational psychotherapy, an approach that can help individuals recognize the role relationships play in the shaping of daily experiences, attempts to help people understand patterns appearing in the thoughts and feelings they have toward themselves.

Based on the idea that strong and fulfilling relationships with other individuals can help people maintain emotional well-being, this model may be beneficial to people seeking therapy for any number of reasons, but in particular to address long-term emotional distress, especially when distress occurs as a result of relational concerns

Experimental Psychology and Relationship Oriented Therapy

Experimental psychology can be defined as the scientific and empirical approach to the study of the mind. The experimental approach means that tests are administered to participants, with both control and experimental conditions.

Cognitive behavioral (or action-oriented) approaches

CBT is a problem-focused, action-oriented style of talk-therapy that teaches clients practical ways to identify, challenge, and replace unhelpful response patterns with adaptive, healthy thoughts, feelings, and behavioral patterns to reach one's desired goals.

Systems and postmodern approaches

Instead of focusing on exploration and understanding of presenting complains (as in insight oriented approaches) Action oriented approaches use interventions that lead more directly to relief of symptoms by blending action with verbal processing to accomplish specific therapeutic goals. Action oriented approaches are designed as brief treatment models. Most practitioners use a combination of both insight-oriented and action-oriented approaches.

The Therapeutic Relationship

The therapeutic relationship is an important component of effective counseling.

The therapist as a person is a key part of the effectiveness of therapeutic treatments.

Research shows that both the therapy relationship and the therapy used contribute to treatment outcome.
