Summaries for an Annotated Bibliography

You will write an annotated bibliography that consists of 15 annotations. An annotation, for this class, will

consist of a brief summary of a text and an evaluative statement that states how what the article does

would be helpful to a paper you were trying to write.

Stuff to do when writing a summary for an annotated bib...

Your summary should be brief, concise, accurate, objective, complete, and useful. You will not include

direct quotations for this assignment.

FIVE TRAITS OF GOOD SUMMARIES:

1. Brief— 3-4 sentences about the main points from the article

2. Concise—Do everything you can to avoid repetition, wordiness, and unnecessary voice tags (“he

said” or “she said” pattern) . Use parallel structures to aid in conciseness. It is a good idea to transition

between sentences.

3. Accurate—Stay true to the author’s points and structure. Do not rearrange information. Do not

disagree, argue or editorialize. You are simply representing what the author has said and retelling it in

your own words.

4. Objective—Personal impressions or opinions are not a part of summary. Stay neutral and

represent only what the author has said. However, if his tone is emotional or expressive in some way, stay

true to his views. In other words, if the author is being sarcastic, don’t pretend he/she actually believes

what he/she said.

5. Complete—Do not skip main ideas or sections. However, you will omit minor supporting details.

6. Useful--Make sure to finish with a sentence that explains how you plan to use this source.

How to Begin

The opening statement should express the main idea of the essay. Remember, this is more than just

naming the topic or subject matter. You need to state the main idea in your own words—not the words of

the author or of our book editors.

o Steele’s analytical essay argues that black students are more successful when they do

not perceive that racial stereotypes will impose limits on them.

After you have prepared the opening statement, your annotation should utilize concise, well-worded

sentences stating only the main points of the article. These are the points the author makes that supports

his/her main idea.

A finished annotation will look something like the following:

This insightful article explores the marketplace of books and

asserts that there should be a distinction between art and the

economy. To begin, Ellis compares a 1798 Charles Brockden

Brown novel advertisement to the increasing view of books as

commodities. Finally, he cites Brown as saying that works of art,

specifically books, cannot be assigned economic values. This

source will be helpful to refute claims by opposing viewpoints

that books are only as good as the market they demand and

cannot be valued on aesthetic alone.
