Claim

Seaworld should not have trainers in the water with the Killer Whales, also they are making the claim that they should not be holding healthy whales.

Summary

In this documentary, former trainers of Seaworld show all the dangers of working with killer whales. They show how former trainers have died due to whales, simply having enough in captivity. It shows how in the 1970s, they captured whales of the coast of Washington, then when banned from there, they moved to Iceland, and captured a 11.5 foot male named Tilikum. John Crowe, who was a diver who helped capture him, says it was a big mistake and when he saw the whales family communicating with him, it really hit him on what he was doing.

Response

This documentary opened my eyes up to the big problem, holding whales in captivity for so long. Obviously these whales want free, they want to have the ocean to swim in and due to some being captured, they know that there is a bigger world outside of this small pool. I think that having former trainers and people who have witnessed the scary encounters trainer have had with whales, really shows how even they people who were supporting/ working at these places knew how bad it really was. Most of the people who were responsible for putting the whales “away” at night knew it was wrong to put them in this tiny little cage.

Important quotations/ questions

After working there for so long, why did no one tell anyone about the bad conditions?

“To this day, there is no record of an Orca doing any damage to a human, in the wild”

Claim

Tilikum grabbed onto Dawn Brancheau's hair and proceeded to drag her into the pool and continue to do so until other members could remove the whale from the pool. Employees say that after the whale was out of the pool, its jaw had to be pried open.

Summary

On February 24, after a noon time show, Dawn Brancheau was face to face with Tilikum, then all of a sudden, the whale grabbed onto her hair and would not let go for anything. Within seconds, the alarm was pulled and all employees were at the pool doing what they could to help. Susanne De Wit, a 33-year-old tourist from the Netherlands, told investigators she and everyone she was with just walked to a window for a photo when she saw noticed the attack. They ended up lifting the whale out of the pool due to the stubbornness of Tilikum. After he was lifted out, the workers and rescuers had to pry the mouth open.

Response

It is very scary to think that when everyone goes to see these animals “perform” they do not see the struggles that the trainers go through, good and bad. The trainers put a lot on the line to train these great creatures to do incredible things but not everyone sees the danger of it right away. They just see the tricks and jumps they are doing. The trainers have to be on top of their toes at all moments, because one wrong action can throw the whales off and make them think the trainer may harm them in some way.

Important quotes/ questions

"Suddenly I saw (the whale) grabbing the trainer ... and pulling her down in the water," she said. "It was scary. He was very wild, with the trainer still in the whale's mouth, the whale's tail was very wild in the water." Susanne De Witt (Witness)

Claim

SeaWorld and other organizations train animals to provide information about the animals and how they work. They are learning about the way they interact with each other and humans.

Summary

As this was written, SeaWorld employees were learning the whales sound and using it to connect it with sounds they have received from the wild. This column was to show how the SeaWorld organization and others like it are taking in injured animals and nursing them back to health to be well enough to survive in the wild. It also says that most of the animals in there now were born there. Towards the end of this article, it says that it is bringing family and animals together for educational reasons.

Response

If a whale is born in captivity then grows up and something happens where the organization can let them into the wild, how will they know what to do? How will they have the knowledge to survive on their own in the world?

Important quotes/ questions

The guests who visit SeaWorld make our work possible. For five decades, SeaWorld has provided an experience that millions of people cherish. We bring families and animals together in ways that are inspiring and educational.

Key Terms

Hargrove, SeaWorld, orca, trainer

Claim

This article talks about the cautions John Hargrove, a former trainer, took while working this dangerous job. He was known as the “whistleblower.”

Summary

John Hargrove was a trainer at SeaWorld of Texas until 2012. He wrote a book, “Beneath the Surface” talking about his life as an orca trainer. He talks about the precautious that he and the other trainers had to take and he talks about how he owes a lot to those whales. He says that they need something more. He basically says they need the ocean, and the whole ocean due their great size.

Important quotes/ questions

(After Brancheau’s death, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration prohibited trainers from performing in the water with orcas.) Trainers have begun carrying emergency compressed air. And the San Diego park plans to begin construction this year on a new orca habitat, called Blue World, that will more than double the swimming space.
