Industry Analysis
The College of Education, Health & Human Services (CEHHS) is a public institution program at California State University San Marcos(CSUSM) that offers majors in education, nursing, health sciences, and human services degrees and advising and student services. The college strives to engage with regional and global partners to produce highly skilled and knowledgeable workers for careers in these fields. There are over a thousand students that are part of the CEHHS program.
A. Strengths
CEHHS offers majors in education, nursing, health sciences, human services, human development, kinesiology, public health, social work, and speech-language pathology. CEHHS supports its students with creative, supportive, and collaborative learning environments. It gives its students opportunities such as Student Success Grants, networking opportunities, and internship opportunities. CEHHS students are educated and engorged to be agents of change by the time they graduate so they can create positive impacts on local and national communities.
B. Weaknesses
The number of enrolled students is over 3,300. The number of enrolled students is over 3,300, and for the school to effectively manage its student population, they need adequate staff. For the school to effectively manage their student population, they need sufficient staff. The institution is weak in acquiring teaching and non-teaching staff to counter the increasing student enrollment. Another weakness is inadequate facilities to support the growing number of students, especially the valuable equipment and space for training which negatively impacts the quality of services.
CEHHS communication strategies are not updated to be consumer and community engagement. The college lacks a marketing plan moving forward and an optimized website that speaks to its external stakeholders.
C. Opportunities
This industry has significant opportunities as more and more workers are needed in the country's education and health care industries. This need has been highlighted by the recent covid pandemic causing a significant need for healthcare workers as well as teachers as children are returning to school, and the number of educators is decreasing. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, California was ranked last in teacher to student ratio in 2019 at 23 students per teacher. This number has only increased since the pandemic. Another opportunity is the rapid increase in demand for health and human services-related positions created by the baby boomer generation reaching older ages and requiring care. For example, it is expected that professions such as home health aides, physicians assistants, and nurse practitioners increase by 41, 37, and 31 percent, respectively (Conlan 2022). The College of Education, Health, and Human Services at CSUSM may see an increase in enrollment due to these societal needs. All of this allows the college to develop a marketing plan that takes advantage of society moving into health and human services-related industries.
D. Threats
A threat affecting the institution's operation includes competition from the competing colleges that offer similar courses in nursing and humanities. For the institution to remain competitive in such an industry, it must ensure that it provides high-quality services at a lower price than what the competitors are offering. Another strategy that the institution can implement to counter the pressure from the competing institutions is scholarships that will allow students to learn without paying school fees, improving the enrollment rate despite higher competition within the industry.
Another threat is the changing technology in the external business environment, especially for the simulation during practical lessons. CEHHS could fall behind other universities in its use of social media for marketing and website optimization.
E. Trends
The majors offered through CEHHS are becoming more impacted. Over the last five years, almost all majors within CEHHS have increased their student population. Most of these students are female and California residents. Over half of the student population are in the undergraduate program. In the Fall of 2021, CSUSM’s total student population was 16,255 students, and 3,112, or 19.1%, were CEHHS students. The college is the second biggest program at CSUSM.
