English 102  First Paper Guidelines and Prompts

Due Dates  Rough Drafts ​(two copies): In class on ​October 1  Final Draft​ (one copy): ​In class on ​October 8 

  Guidelines: ​For your first essay, you will be writing a short paper of 3-5 pages in length that responds to  one of the prompts that follows below. Your paper should contain an evocative ​title​, an ​introduction​, a  thesis​, ​topic sentences, ​and use ​examples, quotations, ​and ​explanation ​to illustrate your ideas. Writing a  formal ​conclusion ​is optional. As this paper will focus on a single text and not engage with multiple works,  you may cite your quotations by using parenthetical references to paragraph numbers; you need not use page  numbers. Please proofread to ensure you have not made too many mechanical errors.     

Paper Format: ​3-5 pages of prose, double-spaced, and written using the current formatting conventions of  MLA.  

  Prompts: 

1) Examine the chronology of the plot or narrative of one of the stories that we have read for class. Is  that plot linear or non-linear? How does the way in which the plot is structured affect your reading of  the narrative itself? Choose a few salient examples from a single story and explain their importance to  the overall narrative. (​Narratology​) 

  2) Music of various kinds figures prominently in the short stories “Sonny’s Blues” and “Where Are You 

Going, Where Have You Been?”. Note all the times when music is mentioned in either story, as well  as all the varieties of music in each narrative. What story seems to be told both ​through​ and ​about  music in “Sonny’s Blues” or “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”. What meaning does  music hold for each narrative? How does music advance the plot of each story? (​Music and Text​) 

  3) Consider the role of the narrator in a story that we have read. How does that role influence the 

reader’s perspective of the story?   

4) Explore the theme of one of the short stories that we have read and explain how the story presents  that theme through both storytelling and symbolic language.
