The expectations of the messiah
The Expectations of the Messiah
Jesus was expected to be a king, priest, and prophet. He was all these things because Joseph was from David’s line, Mary’s family was in the priestly line, and Jesus was recognized as a prophet.
Actions of the Messiah
-Expected to bring together the tribes of Israel. For I will take you out of the nations;I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back to your land(Ezekiel 36:24)
-Expected to cleanse the Temple. And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayers for all nations?’”(Mark 11:17)
Actions of the Messiah
-Expected to deal with the enemies of Israel. Jesus knows that the enemies are not Rome literally, but sin and death.
-Expected to reign over all the nations. God reigns over the nations;God is seated on his holy throne.(Psalm 47:8)
Jesus brings everything together as the Messiah
He is the New Adam
He is the King
He purifies the Temple
He is God in Flesh
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.(2 Corinthians 5:21)
The Transfiguration
Jesus(Gospel) fulfills the law(Moses) and the prophets (Elijah)
Sinai, Horeb, and Tabor are the three mountains that help fulfill the covenant of Jesus
In the Transfiguration of Jesus he becomes radiant in glory upon these three mountains
The covenant begins with external to internal listenings that Jesus uses to unite everything in Heaven and earth to him
In the temple Jesus said to his mother “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know I must be in my Father’s house?”
Jesus is trying to tell his mother that she shouldn't be looking for him because she needs to understand that he needs to be at his father's house
We must be able to answer his question “ Who do u say I am?”
The Transfiguration shows how Jesus unites us all together as one in his person
Transfiguration
Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem.Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. (Luke 9:30-32)
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. (Matthew 17: 4-7)
How they point to jesus
The Passion
The Transfiguration connects to The Passion not only because it follows it, but because the transfiguration prepares Peter, John, James and Moses for that shock that comes with the passion.
The expectations of the Messiah connects to the passion because of Jesus’ words could have been easily misunderstood or misinterpreted for blasphemy creating both controversy and persecution.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus
(Romans 8:1)
Death
The Expectations of the Messiah point to his death because he knows the Romans are not enemies but represent sin and death, in his own as well
The Transfigurations points to Jesus’ death because it can be seen as a sign that he will return from death.
He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
(Mark 8:31)
Resurrection
An expectation of the the Messiah that points to the resurrection is Israel, as their enemies because they as soon as Jesus is born, a battle begins and involves a threat to political leaders.
The Transfiguration connects to the resurrection because the disciples are transformed within and prepared them for the shock of the resurrection.
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2 So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” (John 20:1-2)
